I did the same! Sanded it really well, taped the area well - used Home depot flat black over a year ago, still looks great!

I suggest you take it off and throw it away. That is what i did on mine. I needed a chrome exhaust tip like I needed a hole in my head.

Thinking on it a little more, maybe I need a hole in my head. That must be why I hear whistling in the wind.

That doesn't strip the chrome off?

Is it a different kind of chrome than the wheels that scratch when you look at them?

Not at all. I used them on Chrome tips for quite a while. Last three trucks at least. I also use it on the outside of my barbecue, stainless steel, and it works perfect.
