Noting that the first public beta of FORScan was released on September 2, 2011, you can't change history.

I'm sure that some hacker or team of hackers / developers with wherewithal, dedication, and motivation could steal the code or start from scratch to create and maintain a clone or copy of the software in the US. Why would that make any difference?

You can't stop a developer in any location from doing what they are motivated to do.

As with developers in any nation, including the US, there's not necessarily any reason to suspect that the developer subscribes to, or supports the ideologies, policies, or politics of that nation's government. Or, to believe that those individuals don't hold or support even more corrupt ideologies. You just don't ever really know.

If your 'principles' tell you that you should not use FORScan, then for heaven's sake, just don't use it!
Well said.

I understand that and thanks for pointing it out! I just think the software that can modify the computers on a number one selling American truck shouldn't be produced and maintained out of a country like Russia.
Huh?

Who are you or I to tell someone else where they should live, where they should establish a business, where they should run a business, or where those business activities should take place?

If you want to only buy cheese that is made and sold in Wisconsin or only buy Chinese food that is made and sold in China, that's your choice. But you can't expect someone else to found or operate a business.

Nobody is forcing anyone to subscribe or purchase anything from them. Feel free to start up your own company here (or wherever) and offer a competitive product.

I am not suggesting to change history or steal Forscan but rather create something else similar to it within the US so if something goes wrong, you could hold someone accountable. The conversation is not about me liking or disliking Forscan and I think it is rather about a valid potential security and safety risk to an American made automobile. I would think it is easier to hold a US firm or developer accountable for wrong doing than a Russian entity, don't you agree? Does FDRS offer everything that is available in Forscan? If yes, maybe that is the more comforting and safer way to go about it.

I guess I found the answer to my own question! Apparently Forscan has been created by reverse engineering IDS and as such, it is in violation of Ford copyright laws. I found that surfing the web. Is that true? Would anyone know if FDRS does everything Forscan does?

No, I do not, in the regulatory or legal sense that you imply.

There's no shortage of examples of intentionally nefarious, misleading, or just plain negligently harmful undertakings ("wrong doing" [sic], if you will) by software developers in the US (or working under the purview of US-based firms in remote locations) with no regulatory or legal 'accountability' or repercussions whatsoever**.

IMO what does come into play, and what does work as a meaningful form of 'accountability', is consumer response and rejection when "wrong doing" is revealed. That market response may be the best 'accountability' one can reasonably hope for, and that works without regard to political boundaries.

IMO that consumer response / rejection will occur if / when any "wrong doing" on the part of FORScan is revealed (hasn't occurred in 13 years AFAIK).

Personally, I think that if one is inclined to suspect nefarious dealings with regard to vehicle systems, that concern is better aimed at US manufacturers and the remote monitoring and control technologies they continue to develop and promulgate (a tin-foil hat may be in order).

**The possible exception being copyright infringement or theft of intellectual property, which is usually resolved (or settled) in civil actions between corporations usually running for many years. And yes, political boundaries (not limited to just Russia) can serve as a 'shield' in some of those instances.

Again, if any aspect of FORScan causes you discomfort, just don't use it!

I need to make some changes on my truck, just hadn't gotten around to doing it.

Can I go in and get the 2 month trial anymore, or pay the $12?

These irregular turn signals from my LED projector swap are getting annoying.

For those looking to purchase a FORscan license right now, you will not be able to due to banking issues between the US and Russia. Hopefully this issue will be resolved soon. But in the meantime make sure you have a valid license before beginning any modifications to your truck.

Please see there statement below.

DOH! o_O

I just finished reimaging a retired work laptop the other day, and set it aside, Xmas and such. I did get FORScan installed, but that's as far as I got with it and some other personal customizations.

What a bummer, I still have another week off, and I was planning to do some minor FORScan changes too.

Darn Russkies! :p

YES, I just now renewed mine for the ump-teenth time, got the key about 20 minutes after submitting the request, no problems whatsoever.

@Big Dog Daddy, would you consider editing the thread title and your OP to make it clear that only the ANNUAL license is affected - users can get and run under the free 2-month license, and renew that when it expires, with no problem!

Incidentally enough I do! ?
I’m an advocate of believing everyone has their own beliefs and opinions.

So, I’m just poking fun at the matter at hand. Nothing more, nothing less.

It doesn't appear as if you understand.

Again, nobody is forcing you to use FORScan.

Security risk? Because you voluntarily use software?

No, FDRS does not offer everything that is available in FORScan, and vice versa.
