Just for more visibility to them.

My transmission was buttery smooth most of the time prior to that update and now the transmission is jerky especially on downshifts into 9th and 5th. If you’re accelerating and it’s upshifting into those gears and you suddenly need to brake it feels like the bottom falls out of it - noticeable harsh and erratic gear skipping when ICE disengages while downshifting.

Please look into this and/or undo whatever was updated with the transmission.

Always takes time to relearn shifting.
I recommend as someone mentioned here running in sport mode after every PCM update for couple weeks. It forces use of more gears and overall seems to do a better job relearning.

Heck, mine shifts better now than before after the update.

That's one of the biggest gripes I have for the 10r80.
We have several in the "family fleet" and the variances between almost identical trucks is more than I would be able to explain.
At one point we had 3 3.5 Ecoboost F150s and although all 3 were operating without issues, they were discernably different if you paid attention.

Mine was tuned, and was substantially better than the other 2. But that just indicates how much software plays a role in the 10r80.
Of the other two, the one that was better was noticeably less quirky.

My 2022 Powerboost is completely upto date. I haven't noticed anything alarming. But I am not surprised if the latest software package made some 10r80's worse while not being noticeable in others.

My 4-5 shift (never an issue) has been horrendous after the latest OTA update. I swapped the battery and have seen improvement but it’s still not right. The update states it updated the powertrain. They need to send another because they botched this update.

Mine has been exhibiting some rough shifting as well since the last update. Guess I'll clear the tables and go through a re-learn sequence.

Again.... :cautious:

The only thing I don't like about system updates is it would be nice to know when it is a PCM update so we can prepare for truck to shift like crap for a few days. I don't mind the relearn process, but I like to know it's coming so I'm not driving down street jerking along. ?‍♂

What is the update number and how do we know it was a PCM update? I googled PCM = Powertrain Control Module to limit my "Updates for Dummies" questions.

For the first three days after that update my truck used 2nd gear more times than it had since I picked it up in November of 2022. My 1 to 3 and 3 to 1 shifts all now included the elusive 2nd gear. I could finally drink coffee on the commute to work without fear of it ending up in my lap or others staring at the bobble-head driving the truck. Day four my fairytale was over and I’ve nary seen a 2 since.

I don't know what truck you have, but I'm guessing that the technique to get Normal Mode to use 2nd gear applies to you too.

It sounds more intricate than it actually is, but if you can adjust how you apply the throttle from a dead stop, especially if you are going straight with minimal turn angle, the PCM/TCM will use second gear.

The throttle position sensor needs to receive a continuing increase for the entire time it is still in 1st gear. It cannot pause or decrease at all. It must be increasing.

Try starting your foot stroke just a little bit lighter than normal, but never stop rolling into it until after the 10r80 selects 2nd gear. I am not describing anything remotely aggressive, but rather smooth and linear.

With a bit of focus and deliberation, it can become muscle memory automation. And I personally think that the 10r80 behaves more refined with the smooth rolling in/out as apposed to stabbing and/or abrupt changes.

I’m pretty light on the pedal as it is but will try more focus to try and dial in the sweet spot. Ironically I tried another’s suggestion to punch it to make it grab 2nd and it did most every time but most of my daily driving is in town and that seemed too aggressive. Wish I knew what was going on for those three days it grabbed 2nd because it was heaven.

I promise this is a fairly conservative, but deliberate motion. You will not need to accelerate aggressively.

I do admit that if you are right on someone's tail at the red-light, you will feel a bit uncomfortable doing it unless you give them a sec to get some space. I'm not a tight tailgater at stops, so don't often have to let up before the shift beyond 1st gear.

Remember, this is only the length of time that the truck is in 1st gear. It's rather brief, to be honest.

The easiest way to test if I'm a whacko or not is find an empty parking lot and practice for about 4 or 5 launches. If/when you see it using second gear and you were NOT being aggressive, it will give you the confidence to use the technique.

It's so natural to me that I don't think about it anymore.

I am demanding the dealer un-install the latest PCM update and revert back to the old version Monday, called them and it sounds like they can. This is absolutely f*cking ludicrous and unacceptable. The amount of times this piece of shit has banged so hard the last week is insanity. They can revert it back to the old stategy or buy the truck back.

Over the phone they told me they can un-install the OTA and revert it back to the old software so let’s hope that works. They said I’m about the 15th person to call about this shitty OTA update and were pretty sympathetic about it. They said Ford totally botched this update and it’s aggravating several owners and making the transmissions unbearable to live with. We aren’t alone.

If you get that done let us know how it works out. It’s really annoying that they’d even mess with the transmission OTA. I mean I get it, some people have issues with the transmission and how it shifts but that should be an update that you can tell your dealer to patch for you. Why even chance fixing 20% of the transmissions with the risk that you make the other good ones possibly worse :/

Idk whether they are actually un-installing the update or overwriting Fords update with their own older version mated to some sort of tsb. As long as they get rid of this shit Ford forced on me it should be ok.

I’ve always had occasional rough/odd shifts but 95% of the time it was fine. After this update we are down to being fine only half the time. Major downgrade in performance.
