Well it depends... Is your goal to get to your next trade-in? Or do you want to go several hundred thousand miles? If the latter then change oil ASAP. This is to get out any manufacturing debris present. If the trade-in is the goal, then follow the owners manual schedule.

Retired and not looking. I am driving the wife crazy.
I just put about 1/3 of a full fill in then screw it in. Nothing leaks out.

None of my cars, except the Cutlass, have ever used any oil between filter changes. It's burning about a quart every 200 miles or so, but nothing is smoking. I either have really hot plugs or something else is going on. Another project for another decade, if I make it that long.

The initial oil change probably should have been at 1,000, but I waited until 5,000. I do change it every 5,000 however. I pull a travel trailer about 1/2 the time which Ford considers severe duty and recommends 5K oil changes.

Chuck at Granger, knew I bought the truck to tow a TT and said to change the oil at 5K and every 5K after.

I have a decision to make soon.

I've always changed my own oil but especially since my one and only dealings with a local dealer on this truck was a disaster, am thinking it could be a good vetting exercise, to try a different one. If they can't do a decent oil change, without a bunch of grief, they shouldn't be trusted with anything more.

I more or less have 4 local-ish dealers to work with. The closest is out. Thought I'd nose around the next closest and if necessary, work my way out.

I have Ford Pass points to use up and while under warranty, figured assured warranty compliance documentation, by doing it at a dealer could be helpful.

IF, I decide to do it myself, it will be with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and WIX filters.

I may have been 'too safe', but I changed at 498 miles (as close to 500 as I could get), plan to change after another 1500 miles (2000 mile mark), then change at the 5K mile mark and every interval of the 5K mile mark from there on out.

The first oil change was very odd - it had a greenish hue to the oil (not antifreeze) nor was it dark - I believe it was 'factory crud', all the glues, preassembly lubricants, adhesives, etc. 5W-30W blend, OEM Ford filter.

Some people say 1k some people say 5k. I split the difference and did 3k. I had the oil lab tested. There was obviously elevated metal and silicon from the break in but nowhere near levels of harming the engine.

I did 5k for first and everyone after only ever full synthetic.

Oil change is about every 2 weeks give or take a few miles and days.

She’s 2 months on the road and will be due for 4th oil change in a week or so.

Sounds like a great maintenance plan. ??

As a mechanic with over 45 years of experience, I have found that changing the oil and filter, every 3,000 miles, is the cheapest maintenance that one can find. I work on aircraft as well as tucks and cars. I purchased a 2023 PB 3.5l twin turbo, and can’t be happier. I own Cummins ISL 425 as well as Ford Diesel’s, and never have a problem with any of them. I am a firm believer in Oil Analysis monitoring for longevity of the engine. I conduct my first oil change at 1,000 miles, due to the friction of break-in parts, and then, each 3,000 miles.

I do LIKE my 2023 F150 'bottom of the barrel' XL. Cut my proverbial 'mechanics teeth' on a 73 Ford Maverick Grabber 302 cu in. at the age of 23 (electronics up to that point). Learned to overhaul C4's, C6's, ONE FMX :), TH 350 and 400's and a bunch of different engines. The F150 is actually the first time I'd ever heard of 'cam phasing'. I got behind in the industry technology, military & family. Trying to catch up now, SkywagonJim. EV's have caught my attention, goes hand in hand with the electronics background.
