Excess overfill is dangerous. If the level in the crankcase is high enough to allow contact with the crankshaft, the oil can foam leading to engine damage...

Don't tell anyone, but I put 8 quarts in vs 7.75. It won't hurt a thing!

12 years with an Ecoboost and short trips never an issue. Same with my current Ecoboost. Never fuel smell to the oil. I think something going on for them to have a noticeable smell and overfill. Sure an analysis can detect it but usually the fuel dilution with any engine is so insignificant you can't smell it.

Ford started using direct injection on the 3.5 in 2018. 12 years ago your 3.5 would have come with injection in the intake port and not direction fuel injection into the combustion chamber. So you are right it would not experience the fuel dilution like a direct injection engine would. My comment is just for the direct injected engines.

Always direct injection on every Ecoboost. Later they added port injection that helped reduce the carbon buildup issue.
