My son and I just finished 1st oil change at 2500 miles on '23 2.7 ecoboost. We drained a bit more than 6 qts. from oil pan. Replacing with 6 qts. splits the fill line on dipstick. Are we 1/2 qt. low or is the dipstick not accurate? Does factory initially overfill for break in?

Thank you for any thoughts,

Jeff

I'm curious about that too. Same results on my recent oil change halfway up dipstick.

Smell any fuel? Cold starts, short drives where the engine oil doesn’t get to temp leads to some fuel dilution in the oil. One possibility

All of the above. I'll get a sample off to Blackstone. I didn't realize this was a common issue.

Depends when you are checking it. The travel from the fill hole to the pan is not instant. Also make sure you are on level ground.

I let mine drain for at least 30 minutes if started the motor to move it or w/e. Then I fill it up with what the manual calls for, fire it up for about 30 seconds, then let it sit for another 30 mins before i check the dipstick. I dont get paid by the job so I take my time.

The oil sits up in the motor for a while. I think it has something to do with keeping everything lubed for auto start-stop.

Most likely sample will be clean and most likely dealer did possibly overfill if you measured over 6 quarts. Read a thread or two about that here and other forum. The mentioned slow drain back to pan and some techs being too quick to add more oil.
Manual says within the hashed area is fine, just like every other vehicle I've owned. I don't care that it comes up halfway mark. Thread last year said exactly same thing (just searched). It isn't something I'm going to worry about I'll check again in a month see if it still at the half mark. I suggest same to you because it is too easy to overfill by accident.

Yep, oil level did rise on dipstick after thirty minutes. However, the odor of gas is undeniable on the old oil filter.
Thank you for everyone's help.

Let us know what you find out about the fuel smell. Definitely a concern for a 23 truck to have fuel in oil.

It is a common problem for all direct injected engines, which is all ICE cars these days. Direct injection of the gas on a cold start up tends to let a little gas by the rings and into the oil. This happens until the engine warms up. If you are like me and drive longer distances and live in the south you may never experience a noticeable fuel dilution. But if you make mainly short trips you are more likely to experience more noticeable fuel dilution.

Careful with Blackstone. I found they take so long to return results (eg 5 weeks after receiving sample recently) that it wasn't worth using them. I now use WearCheck.

12 years with an Ecoboost and short trips never an issue. Same with my current Ecoboost. Never fuel smell to the oil. I think something going on for them to have a noticeable smell and overfill. Sure an analysis can detect it but usually the fuel dilution with any engine is so insignificant you can't smell it.

Ive never had a problem with them. Longest I have waited is 2 weeks. They are getting a lot of business and cant find people fast enough.

i would rather have a little excess than a little under when it comes to engine oil.
I agree with that.

Curious people have tested ridiculous levels of overfill. A half quart over is nothing.
