F-150 vs. new Tundra

Hi all, I’m new here. I just bought a gently used 22’ Powerboost with 19k miles. I came from a 2022 Tundra TRD off road. They all have their issues. If you look deep enough even the last gen Tundras have issues and they ride like crap. I’m loving my Powerboost and plan to get an extended warranty through Granger. One thing I’ll note is the Tundra forums actually have legit Toyota engineers that monitor the sites and will help answer questions or assist with Dealer issues. These guys were not “Official” as in “Hey, I work for Toyota” but just guys that live in the Plano Texas area and worked at Toyota corporate HQ. I had an issue with my Sirius radio and I PM’d one of them. He took a test truck out the next day and got back to me with a potential fix. If Ford could give this kind of 1:1 help and have engineers that were willing to assist in this manner to document quality issues. That would be a game changer. Anyway, glad to be here. This Latiat Powerboost is WAY nicer than my Tundra was
what made you want to give up your tundra?

About a year ago several guys had started reporting engine failures which made me leary. Toyota didn’t respond right away and finally came out with the engine recall for 2022 and 2023 non hybrid 3.5 TT V6 last summer. Mine fell into this category. I sold it around March right before the recall came out. I was not a fan of the power delivery or the ride. I had a loaner 2024 Tundra for my wife’s 4 Runner and they have addressed the power delivery issues but the ride is still very soft.

Talk me off the ledge! Looking at a 2025 Tundra limited trd off-road 4x4 that has an msrp of $66k but they’re discounting it down to $60k. They also have 10 years of free oil changes as well. What do you think? I still worry about these new tundra engines and I feel more comfortable with the 3.5 EB since it’s been around for a while.
You can get a FX4 lariat powerboost around my area for that pricing with quite a few more features.

Ford is on their 3rd gen of 3.5 and it's got all of the bugs worked out. Toyo still has a ways to go. Ram is no different with their new motor that's full of bugs.

The Tundra lacks a locking or even a limited slip differential and no option for a large gas tank and it has the very worst bed design for getting up and back down safely. They use the Amp Research step that I installed on my 2011 Chevy pickup and it was better than nothing but nowhere near as good as the Ford pull-out step and the pull-out grab bar.

When I saw the step and grab bar on my gardener's truck I knew that my next truck was likely to be a Ford. What has long struck me as strange is how a company produces a new innovative feature and the folks at the competition have a "not invented here" approach and mindset and ignore it completely or do something half-assed like the GM toe recesses in the bumper.

Parked next to one in parking lot yesterday! I thought the look would grow on me. ..it hasn’t. Went from Tacoma to F-150, couldn’t be happier.

Similar, I went gen3 taco, gen4 4Runner, and thought I would want to refreshed tundra, but I just cannot get into the looks and now that their engine self destruct I am not interested.

f150 has been nice, but plenty of flaws in this truck as well.

My cousins 1794 with TRD package has the locker but it’s all but useless since you can only use it in 4L. If you can’t engage in 2WD might as well not even have it.

That’s a little more than I paid for my 502A custom order from granger in 2022. Their pricing and customer service at the point of sale was phenomenal.

I looked at Tundra when I bought my 2012 but it had 50 less HP and almost 1/2 the MPG as my PowerBoost. Definitely would not now with all their reliability issues.

I didn’t know Grainger existed and the 7.2kW PBs were few and far between down here. Lariat high option was mid 70s. KR in the 80s.

I’m still loving my purchase. I try not to envy others success just emulate it where I can ?

I had to drive it 1,400 miles home, but it wasn’t bad. And the nearly $10k off MSRP was worth a night in a hotel

We have this thread on the Tundra board too.

I owned an 09 Tundra for 13 years before my '21 Powerboost. Probably about 2 longer than I planned to waiting for what turned out to be a disappointing redesign. No flat load rear floor, no generator, not the power bump I was looking for, awkward interior, confusing infotainment system. Interior room shrank with the redesign.

Not to mention the QC issues. When they followed up with the redesigned Tacoma it became clear that's where Toyota invested the real development money because that's the segment where they already dominate. Gen3 Tundra was an afterthought.

To me the most attractive thing about right now is the deals you can probably get with everyone scared by the engine recall. The truck is not what I would call "bad" and it is definitely a step forward from the Gen2/2.5. But Toyota has pretty much admitted they aren't trying to be super competitive anymore because there was no big market share payoff for trying to leap frog everyone in 07. This time they are content to be mid pack and maintain their small piece of the market from returning loyalists.

Their half ton market share is too big to just walk away from but not big enough to be worth trying to break the mold again.

5.7 and 6 speed combo was rock solid so just holding onto it with a 10-20 hp bump might have kept me in the fold. Like "hey, I get nothing out of this new package but at least a fresh 0-mile version of a powertrain I know will give 10-plus years trouble free service with just fluid changes."

But if you're ditching it and going to a techy TTV6 like everyone else I might as well roll the dice elsewhere.

I waited for the new Toyota Tundras to appear on dealer lots before buying a new gas pickup, having sold my Chevy Duramax diesel in 2018. When I saw the new body design that was actually worse than before for being able to get up into the bed without a step ladder I switched to looking at the F-150 and the Ram 1500 trucks.

I routinely pick up bags of garden soil or concrete or nursery plants and put them in the bed of the truck. Getting up in the bed while loading and again when unloading is very important to me. Bumber step inserts remind me of the stepside trucks of the 1950's and one should expect better today. Both Ram and Ford engineers took the time to provide better solutions, something that GM and Toyota continue to ignore.
