I was expecting to see what you show in the first diagram. Given the heat exchanger (second diagram) I do wonder if it drains under gravity?

what I thought were lines for trans fluid to move forward are coolant lines for the fluid to water heat exchanger.

Yea, it's easy to come across dated information regarding the 10r80.

Your picture above includes the coolant lines from the transmission cooler to the radiator. That's engine coolant being circulated through the side mount transmission heat exchanger.
