Great All-Terrain A/T tire test for winter performance in snow & ice.

Each tire was tested and rated in:
❄ Snow Handling
🧊 Snow Circle
🚙 Snow Traction & Braking
🧊 Ice Traction & Braking
In this in-depth test, you’ll see how the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT, BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO3, Toyo Open Country AT III, Nokian Outpost nAT, and Falken Wildpeak AT4W perform in extreme winter conditions — and how they compare to a proper Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tire benchmark.
Surprising results, real-world lap times, and some serious grip differences you’ll want to see before buying your next set of tires!
Tires Tested:
Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT
Nokian Outpost nAT
Toyo Open Country AT III
BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO3
Falken Wildpeak AT4W
Test Size: LT 265/70 R17
Temperature Range: -7°C to -13°C
Location: Controlled snow and ice testing facility

wow! was interesting to see those stacked against each other and I was not expecting the final results to be what they were! Im currently running the BFG KO2's on my 22' and I am completely happy with them here in New England but may just consider the Nokian or Mickey Thompson for my next purchase.

I'll never consider Mickey Thompson after how they treated me with two warranty tires.

The Nokians look great though.

I looked at them all....Nokia just didn't seem aggressive enough for me.
Mickey Ts were but weren't available for a few weeks.
KO3s look good, they were in stock and im an impulse buyer so thats what I got😁.
Almost December and we've had little or no snow here in southern Alberta.
Previous experience with the KO and they were very good so I expect the KO3s to be more than adequate.

Hard to be happy with AT's if you've ever had real winter tires. And easy to get in trouble too...

I'd be unhappy with the winter tires in mud too....which we can get at any time in the winter when a Chinook rolls in.
30 plus years of winter and offroading here in Alberta and I've never had anything but ATs with snow flakes.
I think ill survive.

I put a set of KO3s on the FJ
We just got 10 inches of snow
This new BFGs are certainly better than KO2 that I’ve always ran on it

Very happy with their ability in snow

Don't disagree about the mud, and maybe this is just a use case, but but the majority of my winter miles are on a snow/ice covered paved or frozen dirt road. I can compensate for mud when it happens, been doing it for 45 years. But I drive 20-25k per year, just sold my '16 with 200K. I know the conditions I operate in the most, and winter tires are for winter. Kinda the point of an A/T, jack of all trades, no? Like a Leatherman: a knife and pliers, but neither a good knife nor good pliers:)

Yep…….the sweat is real
Ten years in Tampa
Five years in Miami

I’ll take the snow…….
You need 3 or 4 inches of slush. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain. It really is special. 🤣🤣🤣

I know exactly one person who owns a truck and puts winter tires on.
His truck never sees gravel or mud,or deep snow unless its on the street.
Everyone else....AT tires.
So I guess they are good enough.

yep, live in Central Indiana and we just got about 16 inches of snow over the last week.
I’ve lived in Montana, worked in Washington & Alaska.

I know all about snow……

All-terrain tires are a compromise
They do a fair job at what they’re asked to do
There are better winter tires
There are better highway tires
There are better mud tires
