CA Born and raised here. I cannot stand the taxes, leadership, cost of living, homeless population, etc....but having traveled and visited a TON of states...this one would still be very hard to leave. The diversity in landscape and weather is incredible. I can get off work at 6am in Huntington Beach and be in some pretty incredible off-road BLM camping by 10am nowhere near anyone else with amazing views. Or I can drive 2.5 hours to the central coast to visit family in the country, where its still very much the country. I think if I was in a different financial situation I would look elsewhere, and may still when I retire, but for now like I said this is a very difficult place to leave. All that being said, if big brother starts taking over our vehicles to the extreme, I'd buy my 01 diesel excursion back or wait for someone to come out with a defeat device.
My position has always been, "If someone paid me enough and made it worth my while, I could live almost anywhere." They would just have to accept that they are paying me the CA, NYC, etc. premium. And by premium, I mean about 5-10x my income so that I can keep the same standard of living.

Why anyone still remains in kooky California and suffers its lunacy and oppressive taxation is beyond me. Sure, there are some nice places to live. They're nice to visit also, then you can leave.

All Californians, who can read this text in English already moved here in Texas. Yes, their relocation took longer than usual due to lack of interstate EV infrastructure.

CA also pumps more tax dollars into the fed than they take which helps mostly red moocher states that take more fed money than they put in.

Some people should consider being less critical and more thankful the US has a CA. Enlightening thread, especially for someone fairly new to the board. Thanks.

Since California has almost 10 million more taxpayers than the next populous state (TX) and person's incomes are higher than average (as you already pointed out) the states income taxes are more substantial. Assessed property values generate more taxes than the states you're using for comparison as well. Your post seems relatively anecdotal. Moreover, California's tax system benefits from a 15% tax on cannibis sales - something the "red moocher states" are not receiving.

Again, if you're happy with how the state is governed than more power to you. Not here to argue but I wanted to respond to your point.

In Iowa we have a 1.8 billion budget surplus. However, our governor Mrs. Kim Reynolds, like most politicians, strikes me as a daft, out of touch birdbrain more often than not.

Welcome to the board, btw!

Edit for clarification: CA has about 10 million more citizens, not necessarily taxpayers.

CA is blessed with some amazing natural wonders (parks, seashores, scenery, etc) and more than a few cultural wonders (museums, etc). I've enjoyed visiting many of them.

I'm happy to have missed encounters with wildfires, mud/rockslides, and earthquakes.

CA's politics, legislators, and governance in general? Well, given my personal distaste for the current situation of such in my home state of Texas, I'm not in much of a position to comment on that other than to offer that in both cases IMO there's room for improvement.
I was in the north ridge quake. Didn't own property at the time and found it quite fun. For several days after the fact the aftershocks rocked me to sleep.

I do not miss that state and I could live out there free if I wanted to. No thanks.

CA is the 9th largest economy if treated as a country. Still doesn't make any of the nonsense that occurs there, okay.

That totally is not an effect of 100+ years of Asian-American trade and strategic port locations as well as natural resources. Nooooooo, it’s all thanks to Nancy Pelosi!

I do really enjoy how citizens of states like NY and CA try and claim this success off of people who lived 100+ years ago, as if the entrepreneurs and merchants who founded their paths to success/employment would agree with any of their ludicrous policies in place today.

Great GOLF!
Beautiful beaches.
Good weather.
And there's some rule that girls can't even go outside if they have a pimple? (Las Angeles area anyways)

So everyone looks perfect!

I don't actually live there.
Observations of a tourist.
35 years ago too. ?

Well, 1st of all...?

2nd… I’m sorry that California’s public schools deprived you of a decent education but had you received an education about American History in a State that wasn’t teaching you to hate your country, you would know that the very argument you are making is “nothing new”.

It’s the very same argument that started the American Civil war of 1861.

AND… you would know that in that war, Republicans were forced to slaughter hundreds of thousands of American Democrat young men. (that’s you and “yours”)

Maybe YOU just long for a 2nd chance to even the score by regurgitating the same old crap that didn’t work out too well for “your side” last time.

Fine. So be it…

Just remember… “your side” HATES GUNS and is 100% reliant on a Police force that YOU have "defunded". Oops!

The other side is heavily armed. ?

How about we just “agree to disagree” and leave it at that “THIS time” ...while joining forces in our mutual LOVE for the American made Ford F150!?
??

Sixty percent of recently moved residents on our street are Californians (pronouns They/Them) and only twenty percent are born and raised Texans (pronouns Sir/Ma'am). I am still wondering why they decided to leave Paradise for hot Texas. I'd love to go and ask them in person, but I don't speak their native Hindu language.

That MUST BE VERY concerning.

BUT… YOU have a narrow window of opportunity (while they STILL feel like foreigners in a strange land) to “set them straight”.

DON’T BE SHY!it’s NOT a very “Texan look!”

LET THEM KNOW in no uncertain terms that THEY aren’t in California anymore and the “California Dream” that turned into a nightmare ISN’T “WELCOME” in TEXAS!

They are… their “dream” isn’t!

I live here because it makes it financial sense and because I like the availability of things to do.

Both me and my wife make 2x what we would somewhere else.

Our property taxes are "locked in" due to California's property tax rules, so I pay taxes on my house from 15 years ago. If anything the taxation is "oppressive" to those who are new to California, those that have been here for a while its a tax haven. I've looked at other states and when I combine income, property, and car taxes I would pay more somewhere else.

There are 300 days of sunshine, in the winter when it is "cold" I have to bear the indignity of wearing a hoodie instead of just a T-Shirt. I don't even know what a snow tire looks like. Oh, and amazing roads to drive fun cars on, so many great roads. I live an hour from the beach, two hours from the forest, and three hours from the snow (that I usually avoid, though once in a while it's a good time).
I enjoy fishing, shooting, car culture, and a ton of other things that people think for some reason you can't do in California.

Though the number one reason to live in California? It is hilarious how it lives rent free in so many people's heads.

You know, I feel really bad about Californians living outside the rotten counties. They are great people with great values and they love their beautiful state.

Oh, and I live 70 minutes from the beach, 20 minutes from forest, get to enjoy seasons, and pay a lot less taxes! It’s a blessing that we have such a great country to live in, with lots of wonderful choices, from sea to shining sea!
