Recovering Jeeper who just made the move - 2024 XLT with the short bed - and need to get it set up.

Want to do a hard folding tonneau and want one that folds up against the cab so I have use of the full length of the bed.

Am going back and forth between the Bakflip and the Leer - i know each has been discussed at length, but thats part of the problem as it's almost too much to sort through. Additionally, a lot of the posts are from years ago, and hearing some say that the newer Bakflips aren't quite holding up like they used to. Would love to hear your take on this.

Thanks for the help, very much looking forward to hearing your perspectives and being able to share my own down the road.

As any Jeeper probably knows, BAK, EXTANG, GATOR, UNDERCOVER and the factory branded covers are all manufactured by Realtruck. The differences are mainly in finish, whether or not the underside is carpeted, etc... The rails, drains, clamps are all the same.

There have been complaints about Leer's customer service. Say what you want about Realtruck, but if you have to file a warranty claim they are - in my experience - pretty good about handling it.

I'd look on FB Marketplace and see what's available near you. There are plenty of gently used ones that people have purchased, then sold the truck, or went to a camper top, etc...

The Lomax ones are on hella sale right now on their website. I've been looking myself as I recently sold my power roll up cover.

I like my Bakflip mostly…but it’s not very good at keeping the water out at each corner. Also, on a 6.5’ bed, one of the hinges doesn’t have a latch, which isn’t a huge deal in actual use but it is a very annoying sign of cost cutting.

They all leak around the tailgate. Get a seal kit and it helps. If it’s leaking at the front corner it’s an installation issue.

I've had the MX4 on my 2018 and again on my 2022. Very pleased how they hold up. I like that you can open and close the tailgate without opening the cover (not familiar with the Leer). Very easy to install and you can remove it in jus a few minutes if you need access to the entire bed. The fit is very good. Only leaks around the tailgate, but not enough to soak anything in the bed.

After paying attention to alignment when installing, then getting weather stripping on the PAT, I've had ZERO issues with the BakFlip MX4.

I have the Leer and it is the same way.

This is exactly what I was looking for so far - seems like lots of Bakflip positives, with minimal Leer feedback other than customer service issues. Basically not necessarily a knock on the Leer, but definitely not selling it....

I had a Bakflip G2 on a truck for several years and was not happy with how the latch mechanism held up, or should I say failed to. Prop rod also snapped off after awhile. In the end the latch setup Became un salvageable after me taking the casing off and cobbling it back together a few times. I would not buy another Bakflip. I have a 650 dollar bare bones Rugged Liner Brand topmount hard folder with minimal features that has done the job with no complaints for 3 years on my Powerboost. I am leaning towards the LEer next as it has no drainage system and folds all the way up for a full bed without blocking the cab light/rear view camera.

2nd down my list is the Lomax. Done a lot of reading and the two seem to be among the top most liked hard folders in the $1000 range out there.

I have a LEER HF650 and have been a big fan of it. Keeps 99% of the water out and folds almost entirely out of the way without blocking the third brake light.

The BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover has recently been updated to include new prop rod clips and rail end caps, as well as a new installation hardware kit for a super straightforward installation. Its heavy-duty core, aluminum panels do a superb job of keeping your gear gear protected and secured. If you have any specific questions about the MX4 or would like to know more about it, feel free to PM me or email me any time!

I have the LEER and I'm happy with it. It looks good, was easy to install, and when you have it all the way up it uses the prop rods to hold it up so it's not leaning against the cab and doesn't block the 3rd brake light. I also liked the style release they used for lifting the panels, some use a cable release which makes it really easy from the corner of the cover to loop the cable and pull the release so they can get into the bed. Overall I don't think you can go wrong with either one, flip a coin lol.

I’ve had the Leer since 2022 and have no complaints. It keeps the bed dry except for a little water near the tailgate, and it still looks like new. The only issue is that the seal against the tailgate is getting a little warped. I plan on contacting Leer for a new one, we’ll see how that goes.
