Closing the loop on this thread: There is a new fix for the evaporator freezing up issue. It's a software update on on the HVAC control module. Just got my truck back today from the dealer after performing this service along with finally getting the wiper motor recall completed. Also, thanks to this forum I realized my 12v AGM battery was faulty which the dealer confirmed and replaced under warranty. And thanks to intervention by the Ford customer service team on this forum, I got my oil changed for free.

Hopefully the software fix will solve the AC issue once and for all. Either way I'll give a follow up this fall.

Is there a TSB for this that you know of?

How long do you need to have the A/C on for this issue to happen? The longest I’ve driven so far with the A/C on is 45 minutes and it blows cold.

I'm not sure if it's so much a question of time for it to freeze up. But more so to do with weather conditions, Ice will form more quickly with high humidity, high external ambient and low in vehicle temperatures. I haven't yet encountered the problem either, but in the northeast we really don't see alot of high humidity days.

so would you say the a/c is too powerful which causes the evaporator to ice up on the coils?

would using hotter outside air as opposed to cooler air in recirculation mode prevent the evaporator from icing over?

No, not really to powerful, it's probably sized exactly right to work in the most extreme conditions. But it's job is to remove heat and humidity from the passenger compartment of the vehicle. It doesn't really matter if your using fresh or recirculation the system is still trying to remove that humidity. In either position the chance ot the evaporator icing up can exist. The evaporator has a temperature sensor on it which directs the cycle time of the AC compressor under the hood. If. the cycle time is to long in certain conditions ice forms on the evaporator in the vehicle. This ice/water should drip out from under the vehicle as condensate. The new software that is available will adjust these cycle times to prevent the evaporator from icing up during certain conditions.

In a very crude comparison you can liken this to your kitchen freezer, it has a defrost cycle. Ice forms on the evaporator then at a certain time the evaporator is warmed allowing the ice to melt and drip out below the freezer.

So very simply put, the new software will adjust the "defrost" time for the evaporator in the truck.

Update-Truck was at the dealership yesterday and they checked it out. The TSB flash was completed and presumed fixed.

Has anyone successfully fixed this problem? I’m slated to have my dashboard pulled and the evaporator coil replaced on Wednesday. I’m hearing that it doesn’t fix the problem. I have a 2020 F150 platinum. This is insanity. I cannot have no AC in hot humid South Florida in summer. How is it possible that Ford could let this go on for years? I have owned two ram trucks before this and had zero problems. This is unacceptable. We just got the truck and I’m considering leaving the keys in it running in a bad neighborhood.

I have the same issue, but was going to try the TSB fix.

For me it has been anywgere from 2 hours to 6 hours before air stopps blowing. Have had it in 3x where parts were replaced and still experience the issue. As all stated above, shut off AC for approx 15 minutes, it thaws out and resumes working until it frezzes up again. The higher the humidity, the faster it freezes up in my experiences.

What temperature are y’all setting on your A/C? Seems to me that too low a temp setting might play a part in freezing up an evaporator coil.

I set mine on a 70 to 72 setting and run the fan on a bit high, either 4 or 5. I haven’t had any problems. (2021 Job 1 F-150 FX4, 3.5 Ecoboost engine.)
