Accidentally learned a feature

Good chance many of y'all know this already.
Sometimes I like to put it in M and play around in the 1500 - 2500 rpm range just because turbo noises.
I hit the downshift button while still in D (I thought I was in M) and noticed it will take away as many gears as you tell it to, so instead of 1-10 it will only use 1-7 if you take the top 3 gears away. Unlike M, it will still drop to a lower gear if it needs to. I love that it will stay in whatever gear you tell it to with M as long as it won't stall out.
They probably intended it for towing or something.

Yes, it's what we old-timer Ecoboost towers call "locking out overdrive", which with the 10r80 is 8,9,10

This feature has been around for years on the 6R80 that was the predecessor of the 10r80. That - sign button is your friend to keep boost down and rpms up to lower engine coolant temps.

And If you press + when it's already at 10 you can't see any gears on the screen. I was confused why I couldn't see them and eventually found that was the reason.

My Lariat does not do this. The gears are always displayed unless something has changed in an update since I last drove it.

I do have a 2020 F150...maybe I mispoke for 2021+. I don't know why you would want to not see any gear display but I found it trying to figure out why the display was gone.

My 2019 Ranger was that way. Even more annoying was that the default was the gears were hidden. So you had to press + each time.

But my 2021 shows them all the time.

I use it in my neighborhood to limit to 4 only to avoid the idiotic breaking transmission noise/hard downshift when it downshifts from 5 to 4 in slow speed

I would expect that this would also disable grade control and other assist features that work only in auto mode.

My 21 Lariat does it. I used to use it all the time driving around town because my transmission shudder was so bad.

and if i an just around town..under 60 mph i leave it locked out at 8
has increased my mpg by 1.7 ...no cow crap
1700- 1900rpm the engine seems to feel alive.

I just discovered the gear shifter going into park automatically if you open the door when it’s in drive. Haha
