i filled up my truck when the DTE was 0 miles and i was able to put in 34 gallons.

Yes, it’s extrapolated from the average of your recent MPG. So if you just filled up the tank after lots of poor MPG city driving and get on the highway; your DTE will actually increase as you drive, or if you are going down a long hill, or drafting a big milk truck, it can stay stuck on the same number for a little while. One of the things to be careful about in that case, is if the last stretch of your trip is all uphill and has lots of stoplights after you have been on a highway after a while. You might find that your 50 mile DTE became 10 miles after only a short distance.

Twice, when I was getting around 12mpg, I have filled up with around 50 miles DTE and the truck only took 26 gallons. My most recent fill on a tank that I averaged 20mpg on was at 10 miles DTE and the truck took 31.5 gallons.

That leads me to believe that not only is the DTE calculated off of the average mpg but the fuel held in reserve is as well to some small extent.

Notice that the first gas station wouldn’t let me buy more than $75 worth of gas with their proprietary ‘Easy Pay’ card, so I had to drive across the street to finish filling up the tank.

I was postponing the inevitable. Just filled up my 36 gallon tank with 16 miles DTE and took 30.9 gallons, so at 0 DTE likely about 4 gallon reserve this time.
The low fuel reminder is super annoying, not to mention $164.00 U.S. to fill up.
I will not be letting it get that low again if I can help it.

So I left my 3.5 Ecoboost truck till it showed 9 miles to empty and I filled it and it took 30.246. I was wondering is the reserve about 5-6 gallons?

Mine comes on at 54 miles

Trade with you.... bone dry empty...$184.00 to fill. Because of this, I treat 1/2 full as empty...
