I would not be surprised if Ford's reasoning to not run the tank dry is to keep enough fuel in the tank to cool the fuel pump.

I don't understand what is the reason to run the fuel tank down that low? I fill mine when it gets down to half tank. I live in the country and never know when I have to go someplace late at night and the gas station is closed.

In reality, part of it is life. Live in Pennsylvania, but have a place mid-Gulf Florida. When Buc-ee's (trying to compare it to something I've been to in Canada... maybe if Canada Tire added 200 pumps and a wide selection of slightly higher than average has station foods/snacks to its inventory) opened in South Carolina, it was the perfect spot to make the drive in one shot, with only one fill-up -- 1,250 miles, stopping roughly at 625 miles, in 17-18 hours. Going south is always friendlier on the mileage than north, 20.5 or so MPG to 18-19, so the drive back is a little hairier for the pit stop and the finish line. Yeah, I don't account for accidents or stoppages short of our stops, but neither did Kramer. :D
