3.5L ecoboost vs. 5.0 Liter engine?

I had a 2015 3.5L ecoboost that I traded on a 2022 3.5L ecoboost. My wife drives a 2020 3.5L ecoboost. The 2015 had over 183,000 miles when traded. Only ever had oil changes and a set of spark plugs, ran like a top and averaged 18.3MPG over my time with it. The wife's 2020 has over 20,000 miles on it and has had nothing but oil changes performed. My 2022 only has 900 miles on it, so it isn't even broken in.

I tow 10k lbs a couple times per year, but no great distances. Mileage is as expected. Yes it uses more fuel than the 5L, but the 3.5 is a much better tow engine.

I also wanted to be able to make the claim that I don't own any vehicles that don't have a V-8 engine in them! (other ride is the old faithful Rocket V-8 pictured at left).

Couldn't agree more. I got a 19 with V8 and 22 on order with one. V8s are disappearing. I love the sound

exciting! which gear ratio did you go for?

I went with 3.73 and it really rips. I'm getting about 19 MPG mostly city with 4,000 miles on it so far. Supercab with bakflip tonneau cover.

I did. The 3.31 I only pull a single Sea-Doo. I have the 3.55 right now, I did the 3.31 since I tow so little and the fuel economy is better. I hope I don't regret the 3.31. I keep going back and forth since I can still change....22 supercrew FX4 with upgraded tires.

i don’t think you will be disappointed with 3.31.
I have these in my 21 XLT SuperCab 8’ 4x4 and I think they are just fine for most circumstances.
If not buying a purpose built tow or haul vehicle, 3.31 is fine.
It may be a bit detrimental in city traffic, but not enough to get upset about.
Im averaging 19.5+ over nearly a year and 11,000mi.
have not used it for any “work” yet, as I still have the old bullet proof Chevy k1500 (real bullet hole by pissed off little ol lady previous owner—story was hilarious)

not sluggish off the line at all.
the “detrimental” reference was more pointed at city fuel mileage.

in city traffic, the 3.31 will make the engine work just a bit more, but mine is plenty zippy. I am rural and my commute ends just barely entering city limits.
Maybe 5 signals in the 25 mi trip.

Just for comparison here’s my supercab with the 6 foot box, it’s been really great moving plywood, garage doors, and 2x4’s

and if you buy some 16 foot 2x4’s you can harpoon people in reverse as a bonus

I would imagine one of the main advantages of the V8 would be the simpler layout and plumbing inside the engine bay compared to a turbo charged engine.
