For the last six+ years, we've typically filed our returns around the last week of Jan or first week of Feb. Our returns are pretty standard; W-2s & 1099s. In those years, we've received the refund deposit anywhere between 5 and 11 days after IRS acceptance. This year we've been waiting over four weeks. Going to the IRS WMR site, they've been processing it since Feb 1 and today is Mar 1. The refund amount isn't that much, but it is already at the twice as long as previous years' wait. Maybe we were just lucky in the past.

Has anyone received their refund yet ?

Filed my return through OLT mid-morning of Friday 1/24/25 and received confirmation of acceptance by IRS a few hours later.

Refund was credited to my bank account 10 calendar days later on Monday 2/3/25.

That's similar to my experience for the last several years.

I've been doing my own taxes using OLT for many years, gladly pay the ~$8 for 'premium' federal filing (I have no state income tax in TX), the fee gets me forms that are pre-filled with all my personal info and various retirement, SS, and bank account info from the previous year which really makes filing quick and easy for me. Well worth the few bucks, YMMV, no worries!

Filed 23 Jan (Turbotax electronic) — Federal refund arrived 3 Feb. State of Georgia advertises “12 weeks,“ and if you call them before that, they’ll blow you off.

I always end up owing them money. I would rather have more money throughout the year than get a refund.

I am pushing the limits on this and had to adjust my W4 information. If you hold onto too much money, they come looking for it.

I've always been concerned about owing them and incurring a penalty.

I haven't bothered filling yet, I have my withholding pretty much perfect so I'm only expecting about $70 this year.

Well, after five weeks of waiting, we got a fat letter from the IRS today stating that we need to verify our identify. Strange since our address and banking hasn't changed in well over a decade. Went online to verify and it said all good, now wait up to nine weeks for processing. Jeez. I'm going to need to find a way to owe next year instead, but owe less than 1k so no penalties.

Wow, that's just bizarre!

I've managed to anticipate and tweak W4's to keep my filing in the range of +$500 (owed) / -$500 (refund) for many years. Just FYI, I've found this online calculator, which is usually available for the next tax year shortly after the IRS publishes the applicable brackets, standard deductions, etc., helpful in that forward-looking withholding-adjustment effort.

But in tax year 2023 I received an unexpected inheritance (death of my mom). The inheritance wasn't taxed but the interest I earned on it that year was (of course), I failed to adjust for that 'windfall', so ended up with an additional tax due of ~$1800. For that one-time event I was not hit with any penalty for under-withholding.

Good Luck!

The worst part of owing, is when they decide, for whatever reason, you need to pay quarterly taxes. That sucks.

No good. Given the reports of multiple people being found under the same SSNs on the initial DOGE audits of SSN info, they might be trying to make sure it's 'you'. There was something like ~2 million SSNs w/ more than one person assigned to them due to the illegals literally making one up and just running with it. The IRS gave no shits because they're in the business of collecting money and your identity being stolen is a YOU problem not a them problem.

The g00berment has been up to some real shenanigans over the past 40+ years and the chainsaw can't finish up fast enough. Imagine being told you can't get any info on who's been using your SSN because of THEIR privacy. They're a fucking crook, they should be in federal prison on fraud and identity theft charges sitting next to whatever bureaucrat that's been allowing it to happen.
