Automakers are in trouble because pricing is out of control. My 2023 XL SuperCab stickered for $50,490, my dads 2016 Lariat Ultimate SuperCrew F-250 stickered for $56,000. Income has stayed steady and prices have skyrocketed. I make a lot of money for right out of college, and I still think my XL was a lot of money. I wouldn’t even feel comfortable going for a Lariat until I gross over $200,000. Not many people make that, our sampling is skewed because most of us on a new vehicle forum make more than average. So it seems like 175k-250k income is average if you are on boating forums and truck forums, the ultimate reality is it’s not. And those of us who can afford them are a shrinking group.

There was interesting data points on the Expedition forum. In 2007 they sold like 200,000 Expeditions. Today? They are lucky to move 60,000 units. These companies are too focused on YTY and losing site of the big picture and their ever dwindling customer base as they chase high-profit per unit over volume. Ford has had some terrible quarters recently, but this last one they rebounded a bit. What changed? Dealers started wheeling and dealing again, so people bought more trucks. But as prices keep hiking I wonder where things go.

Don't think it looks that bad. Maybe you didn't notice the "cheap black plastic around the headlights" of the 80-86, 92-96, 97-03 models?
I'm not sure why you need to bring in 20 year old models, or make assumptions about my opinion of their styling, but it still illustrates the point I'm trying to make...

Black or grey for XL, chrome for XLT, chrome or painted to match in Lariat's depending on year.

With the different model headlight, looks like they felt they had to do something there.
Those were variations on a theme, where trucks got black plastic, chrome, or painted trim, BUT IT WAS THE SAME TRIM SHAPE.

This time around, the styling is completely different. Captured Lariat for example.

They didn't just make Halogen or down-market versions of that tail light and a flat plastic grill from THAT layout, which would have looked good.

You're putting words into my mouth thinking I'm criticizing the black plastic because it's black plastic; I'm criticizing the design of the black plastic.

Big azz difference between the 24 XL and Lariat for the front end but I like them both. Kinda weird how the XL is a completely new look from the 23’s but the Lariat grill shape didn’t change as much.

Can’t wait to see the XLT front end which is where I’ll most likely end up. I’d much prefer an XL but unfortunately they’re more expensive on the leases, at least they were when I tried to get an STX in 2021.

But if they bring back the Rattler for the 24’s and they’re available in Canada I might just have to deal with the extra cost. I envy anyone that has a Rattler; that’s as close to a perfect truck as it gets for me. Minimal tech with off road capabilities (drools)

Yeah... and? My point was, it was different, albeit to a different degree.

Ford made the conscious decision to make a more distinctive change to the grilles, bumpers and other trim pieces starting in 2004, got much more elaborate in 2021 and seemingly even moreso this time around...

Yep, I just said that.

Look at the E-series and Super Duty XL's starting around 2008, drastically different, with sealed beam headlights even. It was a design choice.

Maybe you have a short memory and don't remember Chevy doing this too with their Silverado W/T's or Cheyenne trims...

You're putting words into my mouth thinking I'm criticizing the black plastic because it's black plastic; I'm criticizing the design of the black plastic.
Look, guy... no matter which way you cut it, Ford has no obligation or reason to make an XL with sporty bells and whistles because 99% or them are going to be white, and hauling gear for workers, not impressing soccer moms. They are going to be white, they dont need fog lights or power windows/locks/big display screens or sync, because the "jefe" buying the truck doesn't give a crap about any of that stuff. The truck just needs to get his crew to and from the job.

If you want a sportier truck, pay for it. I'm sure the STX's and XLT's will be plenty fine looking. If not, go buy a Ram or a Chevy

I'm actually liking the XL / XLT grilles. Won't be looking at doing anything until the next new model is out anyway though. And by then who knows, I might like the Toyota, Ram or GM twins better depending on what they've come out with.

Going to show you in case you forgot... the legacy of the black plastic... not a new thing.

They actually are doing a little better as far as NOT peppering the front of the XL's with as much textured black plastic as they did 2004-2020...

What point are you even trying to make here! I already said it's not that it is black plastic, but the design (as in the FORM and SHAPES).

Look at the E-series and Super Duty XL's starting around 2008, drastically different, with sealed beam headlights even. It was a design choice.

Maybe you have a short memory and don't remember Chevy doing this too with their Silverado W/T's or Cheyenne trims...
You start bringing up shit from other models to try and argue that somehow the difference in THIS model trim is ok and I should like it? You didn't even ask how I felt about those (but yeah, I think those sealed beam front ends look like cheap shit too).

Look, guy... no matter which way you cut it, Ford has no obligation or reason to make an XL with sporty bells and whistles because 99% or them are going to be white, and hauling gear for workers, not impressing soccer moms. I think it's too big a departure from the trims versus the differences from older years. You are welcome to think otherwise, and that it's fine for a low range truck to look purposefully worse when it could look decently better. I already bought my nice truck, so really, I don't have any skin the game.

Tell you what, maybe a 1981 Subaru Brat is more your style... quit your bitching. You want a fancy truck, pony up the $$$ for a fancy truck. Don't bitch because Ford isn't making the base level work truck fancy.

Maybe a 1981 Subaru Brat is too good for, maybe a 1986 Yugo is what you deserve.

Your arguments are absolutely absurd. Childish.

My 2014 was black, and some of the black plastic like the grill actually worked fairly well there.

Exactly, because it's a work truck. Easier to not get chipped paint, and easier to hose off grunge, cement, paint, etc off of plastic, vs painted metal.

Form meets function, over style...

I like my ‘23 Tremor much better. Usually you regret buying before changes but not this time.

Dude, just, what? Are we in the same discussion? How are you so mad at my opinion?

EDIT: I’m not sure how my casual, throwaway opinion spiraled into this, but here we are. I’ve tried to make clear the reasoning behind my thoughts, but they keep getting twisted into the oddest strawmen. I am done with our interaction. Thank you for your time.
