I have seen some older threads but wanted to get your opinion on this 24 5.0 cold start up with smoke.
Oil level is full, and this will only happen each time it is sitting for long enough for engine to get to ambient temp which has been
from the 30's to in the 50's range. I have a led flashlight pointed at the tailpipe to see the detail of smoke.
It seems blue but maybe a white tint and actually smells like gun powder when it was in the garage.

My truck only has 190 miles on it and have had it a about three weeks I know it's not broke in yet, but I wouldn't think this should be normal.
Just worried with all the threads I have seen with the past 5.0 oil issues and wondered who else is experiencing this?

Thanks for your thoughts

At 190 miles your valves and rings aren’t even seated yet, I don’t think you can draw any conclusions about this being an issue until you have 1000 miles to be honest. These engines also create a lot of condensation smoke on startup in the colder weather due to the high compression ratio, I thought mine was burning coolant when it was new but the fill level has never dropped on oil or coolant in 35,000 miles so it’s obviously just water.

I’m sure you know the smoke colors:
Black = unburnt fuel/soot
Blue = oil
White = water
Having said that your truck is too new to draw definitive conclusions. I would be more concerned at 5000 K

Valve stem seals are allowing oil to seep past. The oil sits on the pistons and it's burned off as soon as you start it. Since it's new give it a few heat cycles/ few hundred miles and see if it clears.

To add on to everyone else, wait until 1000 miles, if it keeps happening, book an appointment at your dealer.

Same here after 9500 miles. Once warmed up, no more-

Another perspective-using an led light source with a poor CRI (color rendering index) can make it hard or impossible to accurately judge the color of anything it illuminates. Try for natural sunlight-if it still looks blue, you can be pretty sure it's blue.

24 5.0 XLT, I do feel like I noticed a slight blue tint a few times as well, probably around the 1,000-,2000 mile mark. I am right at 4,000 miles now, I will keep an eye on it to see if I notice it again.

I will say I still do get the white condensation smoke in the morning when the temps are a bit cooler and even noticed it when it was warm outside, but that was probably more dude the outdoor humidity levels being lower.

Boy, I remember the days on old Chevy engines. Pull the heads to have bronze guides installed due to leaking at stem...drove me nuts.

Well, update on this. When i got to work this am we have a 23k f150 with 5.0 and has 56k on it and also had a puff of blue smoke as well in the sunlight. Oil changes have been done every 5k on this one. This must be a 5.0 thing, so makes me feel a little better about mine,but still don't feel it should.

Interesting! Makes me wonder if I should add an oil catch can, not sure if that would even help.

Drive your truck solely in tow/haul mode for at least the 1st 1000 miles. This will let it break in MUCH better as it keeps the rpms up at allows for engine breaking to occur. You shouldn't have any visible blue smoke.

I wonder if maybe the oil rings are low tension because of the cylinder deactivation so cylinder walls keep an oil film during the cylinder deactivation process. Just trying to think on why but a thought. Since others are seeing the same thing I feel better about it.

The rings are more robust for the engines with cylinder deactivation. As always, make sure to occasionally load the rings heavily for a brief time for adequate break in.

I'm now at 4,500 miles and the truck is clean at startup. I purchased it with about 60 miles on it, and there was some weirdness initially and some strange roughness. The cold start cycle is configured to heat up the catalysts rapidly. If you watch carefully it will probably run at about 1200 RPM, with an odd exhaust sound, then 1200 RPM smooth for a few seconds, then 800 or lower RPM smoothly. Cam and ignition timing are changing.
