2021 Bed Step

Gentlemen, I miss my bed step. My Binky just won't do. I was on the Ford site. They sell a bed step package, including the three piece plastic trim parts that are needed across the top of the tailgate. It appears to be an easy install BUT, does it need any special interior supports? Is the tailgate the same across the trim lines? I have a 6.5' bed if that makes a difference.

I'm just not seeing an impossible job here unless the tailgate has additional internal support for the tail gate step.

The base tailgate structure is different from a standard tailgate to a step-tailgate. To do a complete change would be awfully expensive with 'New' parts. You'd be better off looking for someone who wants to tailgate swap with you, or I have the AMP swing down step on my truck and I much prefer this step over the tailgate step, cause I can use it with tailgate up or down.

I used the Amp Research step on my Chevy truck and going down from the bed when I could see the step was not a great solution. The built in tailgate step and grab bar is the main reason I decided to buy the F-150 and not a truck from Ram, GM, or Toyota.

Had tailgate step on my 2011 F-150 for 12 years.
I find the amp solution far more useful. Zero issues not having a heavy tailgate with step inside. If you are fully committed to having the tailgate step the entire tailgate will need swapped out.

So I went to Real Truck and bought their step. Mounted right up and is easy to use. It might be a problem if I were 4x4ing in the rocks, but I only do that when I am fleeing the wife, which doesn't happen much any more since I hid her Machete.

I used the Amp Research step on my Chevy pickup and it was definitely better than nothing. Problem was when stepping down I could not see the Amp swing out step and had to hope my foot was going to land on it.

The reason I went with Ford for a new pickup in 2022 was this tailgate with its pull-out step and its pull out grab bar. The Tundra ships with the Amp step which was one reason the truck did not make it to my short list as with the GM/Chevy trucks.

The dealer can provide a quote for the necessary parts and labor so you do not need to guess about the cost. The new tailgate may need to be painted to match the color of your truck.

I have the Amp step as well. Had one on previous Toyota. Love it. So much more useful vs the cheap feeling steps built into the tailgate.

I’ve never had any issues getting in or out with the Amp Research bed step. I did try the Rough Country before the Amp. It was a POS, didn’t align with the bumper and contacted the hitch. It was about $140 cheaper, but not a good product.

I use the amp step. Would like to have bumper steps, but they had not been invented in 2021. Somehow GM figured it out, but......... I would buy it again. It works well. The only downside is that one must be careful on the way down because it can be difficult to see.
