Hi all,

Recently acquired a 2021 Lariat with the 5.0L V8. I love it so far! The only "issue" I'm tracking is that when the truck is in 4A (i.e. driving in "Sport" mode), there is a noticeable shudder/bucking that occurs (almost like a misfire) in 3rd/4th gear during light acceleration. If I go wide-open throttle in 4A/Sport, the shudder/bucking does not occur. If I drive the same exact way in 2H (i.e. "Normal" mode, or "Sport" and then manually change back from 4A to 2H), there's no shudder/bucking. Am I looking at a potential transfer case issue? The truck has about 30k miles on it, wondering if I should service it first and see if the issue goes away, or take it in to Ford and see what they have to say. Thanks in advance!

Why are you in 4A? That is normally for slippery or wet conditions. Put the truck in 2 or 4H if you want to play around in sport.

When you put in Sport mode it automatically goes into 4A.

Yes, 4A is automatically turned on.
Shouldn't be any issue as it barely activates the front wheels. The power distribution graphic probably isn't all that accurate but it only shows front wheel power on hard acceleration. Switch to normal mode 4A and it is always trying to drive front wheels, according to the graphics.

I never have any issues with a shudder on my truck so they might have an issue that needs addressed.

Oh...I don't have 4A in my XLT ... just thought it would be for road conditions...not sport.

Correct, Sport automatically selects 4A. If I change it back to 2H, no shudder at all.

30k miles is TC flush time. Couldn't see this being TC clutch chatter issue or if it's even noticeable given just how little slip there is between the axles (low probability, but it's time). Go buy 2 quarts of LV transmission fluid and change it. Super simple, see if that does anything. Need a little funnel or bottle hose attachment to get it in.

Did you ever get this resolved? I just picked up a 22 Navigator that does exactly what you are describing

Wondering if that transfer case flush would help, don’t want to waste time and money on one

That's short money to diagnose a potential driveline issue. It could resolve your issue for less than $20 and a few minutes of your time. If it doesn't, you eliminated one potential cause.

I inherently distrust dealers, so I would do this myself
