To be honest, I haven't found it necessary yet. While I'm not experiencing Alberta temperatures of -40 C, we have had -21 C and colder, and the truck's started instantly without issue. Who knows in a few years if this will be the case, but for now it's certainly not a requirement for where I live.Closing the loop on this. The guy in the parts dept. at my dealer told me today that Ford service no longer will install block heaters after-the-fact because a couple of times it's lead to cracked engine blocks during use and it's not worth their risk to install them. Yikes! I asked if he could order the genuine Ford cable for me just to have in case I ever change my mind, so we'll see. There's third-party options too. They tell me unless you are planning on living in extreme cold with the truck outside all the time and/or you have a diesel, it's not at all necessary, so I'm inclined to pass on it. And for what it's worth, when I fire up the truck with the hybrid engine, it powers on with electricity first, not gas, so there's that. I'll just remote start it for 5 min and be good to go.
