cleandetail93, I believe this SSM 53966 is still in effect, which states that certain 21-25 vehicles can’t update APIM if below 23187. It alludes that the updates won’t even be present in FDRS as a choice, but then it further says don’t update the APIM on those vehicles (which how could you if it wasn’t showing, which makes it redundant and confusing to me). So, maybe yours is part of that group, but the update happens to show for you, and this SSM may be what’s happening to you when you try. I’m speculating.

As frustrating as it may be, do what Snakebitten says and keep driving it and maybe in a week or three it will all of a sudden go through ok. IDK.

I don't think that is the case with him, because he shows a pending APIM update in FDRS.

This explanation would make sense but just 2 weeks ago I was able to update past 21146 and get to 22087. Took alot of time but I eventually got it to take. But on this attempt to update after inserting the usb nothing happens besides saying that it is indexing and indexing complete.

To be clear, this message did pop up for you once when you tried to update the APIM from 22087 to the next one?

Yes that’s correct. Currently on version 22087 and attempting the pending update.

Unfortunately, I cannot help you overcome this hurdle. I have reached out to two people that maybe can. One within Ford and one outside of Ford. The one within Ford said he would need a few days before he can look at it and the other person has not responded yet.

What module is being updated for the rear camera recall? I saw a guy that was told by Ford that it is a 7.2 hour update!

That would be a record!

I remember the first couple of years for the Gen14, that dealerships were commonly failing at applying even the simpler updates because they were ignoring the onscreen instructions in FDRS to put the vehicle on an external 12V power source before applying the update.

Can you imagine them attempting a 7 hour update?

Regardless, a 7 hour update is almost a guaranteed high percentage failure rate for all kinds of reasons.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I heard back from my contact within Ford and there is a corrupted partition in your APIM which is what is causing the USB update to fail. Unfortunately, the resource we had here to help us fix these more complicated issues is no longer available to us, so we are on our own. The only way to fix it is to replace the APIM and PMI the new APIM with FDRS.

PU5T-14G670-LJZ

This is the p/n for the APIM in your truck. It is imperative that you find one that matches this part number EXACTLY. I looked through ebay now and didn't find one, so it may take a while for one to pop up. There may be other part numbers that are compatible with your truck, but I don't know which ones they are. So you will need to find one that matches this p/n exactly.

Once you install the new APIM (easy to do, imo......it's right behind the touchscreen), you will need to fire up FDRS, click the APIM and run the PMI on it and when FDRS asks if it is the original module, you select no so it programs it with the software needed based on the current state of your truck.

Sorry brother. Some cases are more complicated than others. There is still hope to get it right and I wish I knew how to fix the one in your truck because I am sure there is a way to do it, but it is what it is.

Edit: My contact pointed out that buying a used APIM can be buying someone else's problem. No way of knowing if it is also messed up. A new APIM I am sure is pricey, though. If you do find one used, ask questions about why it is for sale. If it was pulled out of a wrecked truck that was totaled, then it should be safe.

Rugedraw, is there some last attempt Forscan sideload procedure? When you have nothing to lose?

There is no side-loading firmware to the APIM. It is the only module you don't want to FAAFO with. It will turn it into a paperweight instantly.

Edit: Unless you can program it on a bench via ethernet, but that is outside the scope of knowledge and ability of most people. You can't flash an APIM with CAN bus using FDRS, FORScan or any other means.

Ahhhh

So USB/ethernet is the only straight forward path. Wish someone knew enough to find or compile an executable to manage the APIM drive. (disk management utility of some kind)

The APIM is a sensitive little bitch. Remember TSB 22-2404 was locking APIMs up and Ford discontinued it? You had to try to plug in to the APIM directly using a series of cables/adapters to flash it that way to circumvent the normal update process? GWM, TCU and IPC you can get creative with, but not the APIM.

Lol, I know that I tried all of that back in 2022 it was hopeless. The only way was just leaving the USB stick in the truck with fingers crossed and waiting.
