FAR exceeded payload capacity - what should I check to make sure there's no damage?

The Wife wanted to be nice to the neighbors by helping them get some dirt, which I thought meant they were going to throw some bags of topsoil in the back that didn't fit in a sedan trunk. Turns out they dumped 2 yards in the bed (~4000 lb), door sticker says max payload is 1748. Additionally I have a Zone 4-inch lift. What should I be looking at to see if there is damage? It's due for an oil change, what should I ask the shop to look at for an extra thorough inspection?

That happened to my dad when I was a kidlol. Drove 5 miles in a '96 Ram 1500 to include a mile long steep hill where we didn't get out of first gear.

He drove that truck daily, with no issues, till 2009 when he upgraded trucks.

Have them look for cracks in the aluminum body and the suspension as a whole.

I think you'll be ok but that's just me.

What operator put 2 CY of topsoil in a 1/2 ton pickup? Never met one that didn't know better. Fingers crossed for you man.

Ha, apparently the operator told them he wouldn't put more in than the truck could carry 🙄 I kinda wonder if the... ahem... gentleman... thought it was an F250 😞

At work we put 32k of weight into a F650 and just told me to drive. I hit a pothole in the parking lot and could hear metal falling onto the ground. The leaf springs did not like it at all and decided they were not good with going fir the ride.

So that is where I would look first to see if there are any cracks or missing springs. Should be OK that is bad but nor end of the world kind of weight.

I think my wife was. I'm half surprised the brakes didn't pull right off.

I mean.... that's probably a good option for a lot of guys, but I kinda like her more than the truck...

Did YOU see the load? 2 CY would be a completely full, rounded load in a 6.5' bed. Any chance they simply billed a customer who didn't know any better for more than they got?

Indeed, what operator would do that! Every loader I have ever seen is very conservative when loading. Topsoil can vary in weight depending on how wet it is, hopefully this was dry.

Wow…….

Note to self, tell the wife the neighbors can RENT a truck next time. I learned years ago to never give carte blanche permission for the wife to go pick up some dirt with my truck.

This is certainly something she would do as well

Doubt anything was hurt unless the truck is sitting odd or unusual. Leaf springs are pretty forgiving. If they didn’t break, you’re probably OK but certainly not a good idea to load 2 yards in a half ton.

I fix software bugs!
Wouldn’t the frame rest on axle? I mean sure the springs are completely compressed and the bump stop is squished flat, but it would stop there, right? Then it’s up to bed, frame, axle, and tires to hold the weight?

There is a ton of construction here in central Texas. I see contractors driving around all the time with their headlights aimed at the sky and dragging the rear bumper.

I bet if the driver took it easy, slow stops and starts, avoided bumps and holes, your truck is fine.

I saw a picture, it was indeed FULL with a peak in the middle, at least 1.5 cy and probably close the 2 claimed. The picture is the only reason I started asking questions.

Or even just rent a stupid trailer - I'm all about helping people out, but apparently I go with the truck from now on to ensure proper use

2023 PB 501a 4x4 short bed 7.2KW. PL=1658lbs.
I carried a load of rock too heavy for my old (01) F150 once.

Don't remember how much but enough that it affected the steering during the drive. Pretty puckery. Drove super slow, no significant bumps but it broke the short springs on both sides. One right away, the other within a few months.

Replaced them and had no other problems for another 100K miles.
