Hey all,

Since my 2021 3.5 ecoboost with 112,000 miles got totaled, I'm looking at a 2021 F-150 Lariat PowerBoost with 91k miles. According to the Carfax, it seems pretty well maintained with regular oil changes and transmission/transfer case fluid done early.

Part of what draws me to the PowerBoost is the Pro Power Onboard generator, along with the smooth idle compared to the regular EcoBoost and the improved fuel economy.

What’s giving me pause is reading about the “Stop Safely Now” message that some owners have experienced. My plan, if I move forward, is to have a thorough inspection done by a Ford dealership before purchase and to also purchase an extended service plan to help cover any major repairs down the line.

Also, have any of the TSBs, recalls, or software updates over the past few years made a noticeable difference in reliability or addressed major issues with the PowerBoost system? For those who have owned or currently own a PowerBoost, do you think a detailed inspection from a Ford dealer would help ease concerns about the “Stop Safely Now” problem, or is it the kind of issue that can appear without much warning?

Appreciate any honest feedback.

Hybrid components are covered for 8 years / 100,000 miles so you get 9000 miles of protection.

I have an early 2021 Powerboost. Depending on manufacturing date, I think your truck could be rock solid if built before all the chip shortages and pandemic related issues.

Not saying there's anything wrong with an early Powerboost but depending on the price they are asking you might be better going with a late 22 or 23 with a lot lower miles instead such as a one that's CPO. If you go that route you should be able to add Premium Care warranty through Granger for pretty cheap.

I’d keep looking at the 21s. There were a lot of features deleted or official removed from 22-25. You couldn’t pay me 10k over book value for my 21

Not really much of anything super annoying that got deleted on the 22's unless it was a due to chip shortage. The 23's started seeing a few things get deleted but not too bad compared to the 24's.

Apparently you can buy PremiumCare through Zeigler from whta I can tell, even at the mileage it's at. At least it let me put the mileage and VIN into their system and quoted me a bunch of options for service plans.

At that mileage, you’ll need too have it inspected before they’d approve the extended warranty. I got a somewhat high mileage 21’ PowerBoost two years ago. Since then, I’ve had it in to the dealer many times. Transmission CDF drum fix, followed by a complete transmission rebuild a half year later. It is getting a new towing mirror in a few weeks due to it binding up when moving and possibly a new ABS controller since my current one has a memory error preventing software updates.

I got my ESP warranty from https://www.lombardfordwarrantys.com/

I am so glad I got it in my case. It’s basically paid for itself. Clearly not all will have the same issues I had, and oddly I still really like the truck. I keep hoping that this is the last thing and hope I never get the stop immediately issue

I just purchased Premium Care from https://grangerwarranty.com/ and was far less through them than from other places. Worth looking into. Plus you can buy extended warranties for all other makes/models as well.

I bought my 21 XLT powerboost with 42k miles and it was a CPO. Currently sitting at 86,037 miles and it’s honestly exceeded my expectations. Other than replacing the 12v battery and upgrading the H7 to an H8 battery, I’ve had no problems

TLDR id do it all over again and I’d buy a high mileage without batting an eye

How were you able to fit an H8 battery in there? My understanding was there was not enough room due to the hybrid components next to the battery tray.

In addition to having an independent inspection, look underneath it yourself.

Several years ago I bought a Ford certified 3 year old Ecoboost with Ford's 100k/5 year warranty.

I was surprised when I did the first oil change on it to find it was a mass of rust from front to back. Turned out it started its life in Cleveland and spent a lot of time on salted roads. I vowed to never again buy a used vehicle that I had not personally looked under as well as over.

I agree with Lefty666. Get under it and check every thing out especially rust. Rust doesn’t show up on any report.

Had to double check, I do indeed have the H7 😅
Sorry I misspoke. I did get a new interstate H7 from Costco and 12v. Sorry if I misled lol
