Hello. How are you?

Completed my first DIY oil change after 10,000km / 6,200miles on my 2021 2.7 Ecoboost Lariat.

Here are my observations / questions. Did it in -16C weather with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, Motorcraft oil filter.
  • Location of oil filter is fantastic.
    • Location of oil fill and dipstick is challenging.
  • That small O-ring is a pain, like everyone said.
    • Replaced rings and lubed them in oil before putting back.
  • The splash guard on the bottom is so cheap, if you live anywhere with snow you need to go with an aftermarket skid plate. Can anyone recommend one?
  • Location of drain plug is a bit annoying and oil just gushes out on the the crossmember and underbody.
    • Rhino ramps helped as the running boards are a bit low.
    • My drain plug is red, some people have yellow? Should I replace it? Can anyone recommend one, preferably with a valve.
  • Drained oil hot to the touch, let it drain for 30 minutes but it was still drip drip drip.
    • Couldn't wait any longer.
  • Filled 5L (5.28 qt). Ran the engine for 5 - 10 minutes. Let the engine sit and cool. Checked oil, dipstick is useless, as Pennzoil UP is so damn clear.
    • Added remaining 700ml of oil once engine was cold.
  • Reset oil life was easy
  • Hats off to Ford for making this process easy (but messy)- I would rather spend the money on high quality oil over a dealership's labor. Total investment in equipment was around $200 with a combination of used/new from FB marketplace / goodwill (ramps, funnel, sockets, carry crates, measuring cup, jumpsuit, gloves).

Any questions / feedback welcome.

I replaced the factory plug with the Ronin plug. Look them up on amazon. Currently $40. It's all aluminum and has an insert that you screw in and then you can control how fast the flow comes out. I was skeptical but after covering myself with oil a few times, it was well worth it. It does take a little longer to drain but you can mess with changing the filter housing o-rings while it drains! Also, for the small O-ring, I take a piece of string and place a loop through it, then wrap the string around the slot on the housing where the o-ring will go. Then when I pull each end of the string away from each other, the o-ring pops into place. Hope that make sense.

Kind of but not really. I've seen videos where people get rings off fingers using some sort of similar sorcery but I'm not sure if this the same magic.

Brilliant! I’ll try that next time. Much better than me using some small picks and ultimately jamming them into my fingers several times and bleeding everywhere while cursing.

OP, if you keep your original valve, just carefully, partially remove it to allow the flow to slowly come out with the plug still blocking and controlling the amount of flow. It takes a few minutes of holding it there in place but it doesn’t gush everywhere.

Good deal.. this is my ‘24 yukon first change at 980 miles… on the magnet you can see what has made its way into the filter.. there was also some metal in the drain oil.. i don’t remember if my ‘22 f150 was worse or not.. i like to do the first change preety quick.. good luck.

Yeah I guess it was just so cold and I enjoyed the hot oil on my frozen fingers.

^This

I ended up getting the UPR drain valve. Works great.

This is what I did on my first 2.7 oil change after watching the videos of others making a big mess. I didn't spill a drop! Once it was flowing I clamped a visegrips on the plug which made it easier to hold in position. Now I use the Ronin plug with a hose attached which is even easier. (no holding)

Why so often? Are you doing a lot of towing?
