yeah that would probably do it. Unless I missed something, I didn't think that was a factor?
He mentioned rocking in back and forth, and then mentioned that maybe the truck protected itself.

After wrecking a few picees of equipment, I don’t rock back and forth anymore. I also use 4 wheel low when needed, and sort of let the equipment do the work and not a heavy right foot. If all else fails, I carry a few tow straps!

after recently getting stuck in a rare bad mix of just 4in. of a super slick packed snow mix,(for the 1st time in years) i tried rocking with rear dif. lock, 4L, 4A,4h combos and the truck 4x4 option 100% failed 3x and i had to shut it down 5min. to reset. Finally got rocked out i think it was 4H, but curious what everyone else finds to work best or what is recommended as to not break stuff?

I'm confused here. Did it throw an error message and you switched the truck off and it cleared?

What do you mean by "rocking"? pulsing the gas pedal? Were you in a ditch?

"4x4 system failure" message...and wouldnt go back to 4wd mode unless the vehicle was shut off for 5min. (no code clearing). Yes, pulsing pedal forward and reverse. no, level ground with snow over ice.

Here's the pic the dealer sent me. The diff cracked entirely in half, and if you look at the casting it looks "bubbly" in places at the top and bottom. I'm no metallurgist, but that looks like a casting defect to me.

Ford is fixing it, but because it's a warranty repair they have to put the same part back in so no upgrading to a torsen, and I don't feel like paying extra for one.
Where did you get it fixed ? i'm waiting on pictures of mine but by what they said it's pretty much as bad or worse as your's and the refuse to fix it under warranty. Called ford canada and they said they agree with the dealer after speaking with them. I'm pretty disappointed to say the least and it looks like I'll have to fight for this one.
Happened in reverse in 4 HI

Wait a sec, how many miles on the truck and just to clarify you rocked it back & forth in 4H to clear yourself and ford is not covering it and it went on up to corporate and still nothing? Any additional details, are you lifted/force inducted?

That's awful! Are you still within your 5 year/100,000 km powertrain warranty? Why are they refusing it? I would definitely take it to CAMVAP.

PM me privately and I'll fill you in on my dealership.

37 000 km with levelling kit and 34's. That's a part of their reasons with the truck being muddy and too severe damage.
I was rocking back and forth yes. Honestly with the amount of occurence of this problem I can't believe they're refusing my claim

Yeah, that's pretty shocking. I could see if you were lifted 6" with a blower on 38" wheels tranny tuned etc. but you're basically stock.

Seems like trucks are slowly but surely transforming into grocery getters....
Anyway I'll keep you guys updated cause I'm definitely taking this farther, unfortunately.

That's horsesht. Tires and a leveling kit should have absolutely zero impact on the diff cracking! You are definitely being given the shaft here and I cannot believe this isn't being warrantied.

Hell I had a 4" lift, 305/55R20s, AND a tune on my 16 and not once did I have issues getting anything warrantied at my dealership!

It appears that there is more than one style of front different housing being used by Ford, and one has extra reinforcement around the pinion. Ford also seems to have discontinued many if not all of the 2021MY housings with part numbers starting with ML3Z, they have been replaced with 2022MY part numbers starting with NL3Z.

Early 2021MY ML3Z housing without added reinforcement:

Most underrated post on this subject. This right here is the difference between the ones that break and the ones you dont hear about. Anything can break but these stronger units do make me feel like ford recognized a need to address the problem. I just crawled under my MY2023 with a build date of Aug 2023 and it has the extra ribbing. I feel a bit better now since I am running a 295 34 inch tire and a fox lift kit.
