4WD vs Auto 4x4

If you have a 2022 and up TOD (lariat, king ranch, plat, limited), your entire driveline is always spinning. Leaving it in 4a is really the best approach. The only difference when 4a is pressed is that the transfer case will apply pressure to the clutch as needed. I'd be really surprised if you saw any difference (unless traction limited) between 4a and 2h. 4h just applies max force on the clutch but it can still slip. Raptor and tremor will fully lockup the transfer case in 4h, and will shut off the front driveline while in 2h.

And if you have the ppwer screen to show what's going to the front and rear wheels.

24/7/365 4 Auto. On a tuned eco it's always doing work.

Now that Ford has smartened up the logic so it stays AWD full time below freezing, I haven't experienced a time when 4wd was needed on the road.

Previous truck I used 4 high when the roads were bad to keep the front end engaged.

I have 2 - 2022 lariats, one has IWE, the other does not, if I thought it was a good idea, driving the eco in 2H disengages the front end. Not all 2022 Lariats are without IWE's

I guess if the comfort blanket feels good for you. People have said stuff like this to me on other boards and I can't process it no matter how many times I hear it. Wet pavement is not a loose surface, if you're doing things to break traction on it you're better off not doing them than using 4wd auto to fix it.

Interesting they did it mid-run. I was under the impression it was a hard cutover.

Ya....that's Ford, my V8 Feb build has none, my later July build eco has them, a late 2022 build.

My understanding is 3.5's have them, 5.0's do not for 2022

I have driven a Powerboost for two years now. Winters have been mild so probably seen an hour total in 4wd the entire time, even through rains

My point stands, these trucks spin up at anything other than straight dry road, constantly.

If you drive like grandpa, and live somewhere paved and dry, I imagine it may not be an issue.

I think people lose traction more than they realize it. It's very uneventful and if it wasn't for the crown in the road and the rear sliding towards the gutter it wouldn't be noticed.

I use 2WD about 80% of the time. The other 20% is 4A, split between heavy rain and general fuckery.


Edit: 4A and rain + TC off is my fave.

Ok so in rain I've been burning out and sliding everywhere in 2wd my entire adult life without knowing it, but also without hitting anything on a wet road?

I guess I am lucky to have lived through 6 years driving my Challenger RT in rain before I got rid of it. It felt fine the whole time, didn't realize how miserable I really was.

Anybody run a powerboost in the loose sand like the ramps to get onto the beach at the Outer Banks of NC? I see some posts about sand. I have some experience with this in my old 2006 Jeep Liberty but that is gone now and I might take the truck out onto beach at Ocrakoke this summer.
I seem to recall I used 4wd low on the deep sand ramps and 4wd High on the backed beach. Maybe I will get inner fender wells first.

The PB is easily the heaviest 4WD vehicle I’ve owned, and in 2H with TC engaged it is difficult to break the tires loose on dry pavement. Driving in rainstorms hasn’t been an issue either. Feels planted with good visibility. Used Slippery 4H mode going up a NC mountain while it was snowing and slick as a precaution. It’s just a pretty darn good truck.

Yes. Drove up the beach north from Corolla into the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge. Twice. One of those times drove up into the soft sand in the residential area . Started out using mode "Deep Snow/Sand". Most of the time the torque load was low as I was on the harder sand. Didn't need the RPMs in deep snow/sand mode. I switched to Normal, 4WD, Diff lock and traction disabled and liked the performance the best and ran that way for miles.

Don't forget to press/release the button to turn off traction control. Or you will get stuck. At least I got stopped and had to turn of TC, back up and get a run at some really soft deep sand.
