7,000 lb and following the normal rule of scale of 10% tongue weight, means 700 lb on the tongue which would be completely doable for you. I have a Platinum PowerBoost with the sunroof and I think my towing capacity says 1180 if I recall correctly.
In all of the overweighted combos I have seen I've never seen one under a thousand pounds. 700 should be cake.

Which with my bumper tow camper hitch weight of 836lbs cuts my people/cargo in the truck down to 860lbs. I know 5th wheels are at or above 1,000lbs on the truck bed...so just be careful there, you might need a limited option XLT to get enough payload for your camper.

Hey Jonathan, does the Max Tow option provide extra payload? I've seen a similar Lariat configuration but with the regular tow package and its payload is only 1300ish. Just curious how you got such a great payload on a Lariat WITH the moonroof! Awesome looking truck

I looked up several Sundance XLT 5th wheels in the 7,000lbs. dry weight range and all of the hitch weights are between 1,100lbs. and 1,700lbs.

He would have to thread the needle in order to meet specs for sure.

I would move up to a F250/350 or buy a nice pull-behind with a tongue weight below 1,000lbs to pair with a PowerBoost.

More info: Maybe not on the actual towing weight of the trailer, but on the payload/hitch/pin weight.

Consider the total weight of your 5th wheel hitch, itself. Couple hundred pounds, all in. The mounting bracket, the hitch itself. These are all payload. And the BP lack payload, heavily.

My 2021 PB was a custom build that kept payload in mind. I have a decent payload of 1422 pounds.

My trailer is a bit over 5100 pounds empty. If I assume a loaded weight at a MAXIMUM of 8000# (toy hauler) then my minimum tongue weight is 800#

So that's

1422-800 - 400 (gf and myself) -200 (camper topper)= 22# remaining payload. I'm definitely overladen on payload if I assume that 8000# trailer and 10% tongue. But that's worst case weight.

Since 5th wheels have such a heavy pin weight it would be absolutely no problem to exceed your payload rating. And I wouldn't be surprised if you're overladen with your current truck.

A cat scale is in my future. I did it when I first set up my 2012, but I'm sure the trailer has gained more weight over the years (I have).

Another observation. Ford has decreased the listed tow capacity in their chart by about 800 pounds since 2021. Wonder what's changed?

Don't forget to factor in the weight of the hitch for the 5th wheel against your payload too.

My Lariat is Non-PowerBoost/Non-Hybrid, so I likely have the extra 300lbs from the lack of all that, probably should have tried to make my post more clear, because I do have the 2kW propower (Powerboost is 2.4kW base)

As far as max tow increasing payload, not my knowledge it doesn't...I wanted to order my truck with both, but of course you couldn't get the heavy duty payload package in a lariat, also could not order the 3.73 gears with the EcoBoost.

Always had BFGs on my Jeeps prior to joining the F150 fam and prefer those over Nittos I also ran on a couple Jeeps. Don't like the sidewall on Toyos which seem to be a popular choice in this forum.

I have the factory size 275/60R20 which is a load D tire. If you go bigger you can only get them in Load E, which are heavier, I like how the truck looks, I do wish I had more tire sidewall sometime, but to go up a size, and drop even more fuel mileage I just don't know if I can stomach that.

I'll be towing my 5th wheel with my PB once the weather warms up again. I've got a PB XLT with 1648# of payload. My 5th wheel is a little over 5K dry so I should have enough wiggle room to be safe without going on a diet. I'm new to towing so all these threads with advice are invaluable to me. I would venture a guess my salem hemisphere 25 rbhl is similar to your unit. I have almost 1900 lbs of payload, and don't have any issue, but i keep an eye on the tongue weight. Limiting factor for me more than anything else is trailer length. I would not tow anything longer with my truck.

Thanks for the reply. We just bought a Flagstaff 26RBWS. Slightly heavier but pretty close. I glad to others are towing rigs similar to ours.

Unless you know of problems with your current truck I would hold onto it and continue to drive it. 170,000 miles is not a lot and many vehicles have more than 250,000 miles and the original engines and transmissions.

The sales tax and DMV fees on a new truck is going to be more than a transmission rebuild should that be needed. You know what scheduled maintenance is needed for your truck and the probable cost per year and can factor that in against the cost of new truck.

A new truck is not going to be any safer or provide significant gains in fuel economy over your 2012 truck. You may be able to get a larger fuel tank or different gearing and the 10-speed transmission but that is about it.
