These "modes" are almost nothing more than different 10r80 shift strategies. (along with throttle tip-in mapping)
Ford then gives the shift strategy names/labels to identify the shift strategy with a description that we can associate the strategy with.

Tow Haul describes a shift strategy that a 10r80-transmission engineer would determine is appropriate for the 10r80 under additional load/burden beyond the truck itself.

I always imagine the truck having a manual transmission, and when would I choose to shift under the current circumstances?

Eco mode would rarely represent my personal shift points. Certainly not under towing burden. It's like riding a 10 speed bicycle and intentionally getting to thigh-burn ratios as soon as possible. In my opinion it stresses everything in the drivetrain unless you accelerate at a very conservative rate.
We tow a horse trailer. Well, pony trailer, as we've only put "ponies" in it. But as soon as we hook it up and start up, it automatically switches into Tow/Haul mode. It never occurred to us to select a different mode.
We my wife has noticed, though, is it never goes into all-electric mode when it is in Tow/Haul mode, even on long downhills. So I'm a little skeptical that the T/H mode (particularly) is just a transmission shift pattern change. Although, I think she has said it has never gone to 10, even without her locking 10 out during towing. And I have noticed the opposite effect if I lock out 9-10 when in normal mode: it goes to electric almost immediately when you lift off the throttle. I think. It has been a couple weeks now since I played around with it, and it was just a few miles, and I didn't write anything down. So I could be totally out to lunch.

I will admit that on the Powerboost specifically, which is a 10r80 MHT VS just the 10r80, Ford includes either nixing EV or NOT nixing EV in the various DriverSelectMode-Shift Strategies.

Both TowHaul and Sport mode, Ford nixed (disables) EV.

I can’t wait until HPTuners finds that toggle! Because I prefer the shift points for the so-called "Sport" strategy. But taking EV off the table, even when driving casually, is a deal breaker for day to day for me.

I have a MY22 PB. There is nothing automatic about going to Tow/Mode. It will stay in Normal mode until I physically switch it. I don't recall about automatically locking out 10 & 9 gears. I'll check the next time I use Tow/haul.

I do know Tow/Haul mode locks electric only usage.

I agree, wholeheartedly, with preferring to have EV enabled for the Sport mode. Ambivalent about the T/H mode, and it seems to do OK still on mileage, for just a pony trailer. Obviously we take a hit, but it isn't atrocious.

For our MY23 PB, I'm assuming it detects the electrical connection to the trailer's lights (and I guess brakes? the electrical hookup, in any case) and goes into Tow/Haul mode. It pops up on the screen as soon as you hit start, with the "OK" option. Which I think either of us just hits "OK" to make it go away. I assume it would stay in T/H mode anyway, though, if we didn't hit "OK." Could be wrong, though.

ETA: Aaaaand.... I WAS wrong. It does NOT automatically go into Tow/Haul mode. It automatically comes up asking you if you want to go into T/H mode. Also asks you which trailer do you want to assign (for the assisted back-up steering). We have it, but haven't set up either of our trailers yet.

I once picked up Rosie O'Donnell while hitchhiking... Put the truck in Tow\Haul mode and my display flashed a huge middle finger and all 4 rims popped off the truck...

I just towed my boat 650 miles from New Orleans to St Louis this weekend.

21 PB. T/H was not auto. I had to select it.

It does lock out 9 and 10 and also prevents electric.

It did an amazing job. 25 foot tri-toon with a 200hp Yamaha. About 5k lbs plus trailer.

Mostly on cruise set at 60/65. 11.1 mpg.

Is that correct? Pontoons are usually very light and an average 25'er is like 2,200-2,500 dry and a Tri Toon 3,000? Assuming it was dry for the drive?

Thanks for pointing that out. It was not dry. Pulled as it sat in December.

Probably over a hundred lbs of gas and 500lb motor. So, 3100 lbs plus trailer. I did look up the model weight after your post. Just over 2500lbs.

No worries and not trying to make anything negative, just want to make sure someone else doesn't read and calculate similar (5000lb) towings and think, "how the h*ll he average 11.1mpg??? I'm getting 7.9" or whatever.
Glad the haul went smoothly for you. Long haul to get wet.

I tow 6K+ TT with ‘23PB. In T/H mode, I can get 10th gear, almost always down hill and sometimes flat , so it does not lock it out; however, I typically lock out 9&10 manually - sometimes I forget and then quickly change to cruising in 8th. I will take the fuel mileage hit to save trans.
