The 2023 powerboost we had issues with was an XLT!

This issue is not just on the higher end trucks, but all PowerBoost trucks, and has been ongoing since at least 2019 according to a TSB that I found on all Ford and Lincoln Hybrid vehicles
I should have been more precise in my wording, or maybe just a little more verbose.
I didn't mean that it doesn't happen on XLT trucks. But that it might be driven by something that is standard on higher end trucks, but an option on XLTs, and only occurs on the XLT if you happen to order that option on your XLT.
Ours is pretty stripped down for a PowerBoost. No moving pedals, not the premium sound system, only the basic drive modes (no auto 4wd), no 360 deg view, etc. A LOT of things that we were seeing in the PowerBoosts on the lots we didn't want to pay for, and ended up ordering ours like we wanted, with less. I'm suspecing a module in one of those options is slow on startup, or reporting on the bus, which causes the need to do the two-step start. All this is just supposition, but based on experience with more complex systems that cost way more, and have similar issues sometimes. And they can be a b**** to track down.
Not that I'm trying to defend Ford. Just throwing my perspective out there.

ETA: It MAY have been an issue early on with our truck. I can't specifically remember the fault that occasionally showed up. But it hasn't happened in a long time, and we don't do the two-step. On our XLT.

I'm eating a little crow from an earlier post. I'd started down the road of a collateral exchange, but decided to keep my 23 Powerboost simply because I love the generator. I don't want to deal with this issue and nobody should be forced to wait for a fix from Ford. I'm using the two step method simply as a precautionary measure.

And yes, I do think it's a potentially dangerous issue if someone was left stranded in bad spot or in an emergency. I also completed the NHTSA online form that was posted on a previous post.

Ford definitely needs to get their act together. It is causing damage to the brand. I've said it before and I'll say it again -- I buy Ford because of my dealer, not because of the brand.

Just returned from a wonderful trip towing our Escape 19 fiberglass trailer from Ohio to California and back with our ’23 XLT Power Boost. Three instances of SSN were our only problems. My wife and I love driving this truck, and towing the camper, but the uncertainty of SSN is crazy.

#1 – Short trip from the Yosemite Valley to our new camp in the national forest near Fish Camp. For some reason, at night I wanted to move the truck a little in our site when... SSN.

To fix it, I pretended it didn’t happen and went to bed, and managed to get a good night’s sleep. The next morning it started. Good thing, as there was no cell service.

#2 – A couple days later, we moved from the mountains to a campground on Pine Flat Lake, east of Fresno. Another short 125 mile drive. I knew there was no cell signal, and the next morning, SSN. Eventually I climbed up on the rocks near the trailer and waved my phone around and magically got two bars. Then I used the Ford Pass app to try and start it, because this had worked at home. It worked, so we hitched up and left for the mountains again.

#3 – Several days later, after camping in Sequoia NP we started to head home, with a stop at an RV park in Barstow. Another short day of only 320 miles, and ….a short drive in the evening to go out to dinner. In the morning SSN as I was preparing to hitch up the trailer. This time I tried everything. Including sticking my tongue out of both the right and left sides of my mouth as I hit the button. Didn’t work. Tried the fob. Nothing. Tried Ford Pass. No luck. Checked the 12v battery with my Fluke and found it at 12.4vdc. (OBD Link said control voltage was 12.2v) Disconnected/reconnected the battery. Nothing.

Finally, I used Ford Pass to request a tow/jump. While waiting for the tow truck, 30 minutes later, I tried to start from Ford Pass again, and this time it started. What the heck. I drove to Auto Zone in town and bought a jump start pack, which I should have done a long time ago.

I had not checked in to read about the double start technique before Barstow. The cure, though seems to be time. Maybe one battery charging the other? I have no idea how this system works. Ford Motor Company does.

Were you utilizing the house battery charging from the 7 pin? Did you have the HVAC fan on setting 5 or higher? Given your ~2hr long drives and still only having 12.4 measured, your battery is likely needing replaced.

As for your reception, this is one of those instances of why I suggest using the $15/mo connectivity wifi as the truck's more powerful antennas can get service where phones cant.

If ford would patch the BMS to create a 14v floor under all key conditions, your issues likely wouldn't have occurred.

The seven pin will charge the trailer batteries, but it was probably in a float condition while we were driving as I was using portable solar in camp. I'm sure the fan would not have been on high. One or two most likely. Interesting idea about the truck cellular.

Fan setting 5 or higher disregards the BMS's logic and delivers 14+ volts continuously allowing for the truck and trailer's battery to charge.

Was test-driving Powerboosts at the dealer and had one of them throw the SSN error. Sales guy chalked it up to low battery from sitting on the lot. The other two I drove were fine, no errors.

Found an XLT that I really liked and bought it (this was TWO days ago). Just off the lot less than 200 miles. Got the SSN error. Quick search brings me to this thread. Very helpful information, thanks to everyone pooling their experience and tricks/tips.

I got out of the truck and tried the remote start on the fob, no success. Tried the Fordpass app and it worked. Drove it the rest of the day, three more cycles of stop/start with no errors.
After reading ALL of this thread, I checked the fuses/relays, and as others have found, they were not firmly seated. Not sure exactly where the connector under the battery is located (do you have to remove the battery??), but the orange wiring appeared to be intact and well supported.

Plan to do the two-step start from now on. Just wanted to post here to say it's still happening on brand-new 2023 trucks. Plan to inform the dealer on Monday.

First thing I'd do with a fresh off the lot is give the batt a full charge. No need to fumble with the orange cables, that's high voltage stuff and not an issue. Given the cellular modems in all new vehicles, they really need to look at putting 25w worth of solar on them somewhere. GM vehicles are doing updates and completely wiping out their 12v batts.

After my recent SSN problems I contacted my salesman, who kicked it to the service manager. They checked my VIN, and here's what they know... which means, I'll try to wait patiently. He said that for the last three weeks or so the truck has been generating lots of codes that point to this issue.

Could we finally have a solution? I read this today in a Facebook group I'm in. TSB23-2317 for those smarter than me.

I did in fact have a GWM update pop up a few days ago. But it was for my 2022, rather than a 2023.

Based on the post above, there should be a GWM update for 2023 Powerboost trucks too?

That's my assumption. There are so many people on this thread smarter than I am on these trucks I'll be eager to read what info comes out. This is really my only gripe about this truck and I'm crazy excited to think it might be fixed. I'm in love with the truck otherwise. Fingers crossed!
