Human error.
Easy to make such a mistake.

But it's a HUGE mistake.
Even if filling it with oil appears to be OK, I'd not take custody without the longest extended factory warranty available.

Just once in my life have I committed the mortal sin of leaving the drain plug off whilst filling the oil. Caught it after the first quart thankfully.

I started as a lube tech at a Ford dealer after I graduated high school. A new coworker left the drain plug out of a 3.0 V6 Ranger. The Ranger made it 4 miles down the road before the engine seized up.

New guy had to put a reman engine in, with guidance from a couple of senior guys. He learned a valuable lesson from that, and went on to be a good mechanic.

I change my own oil for 4 reasons:

1. I can have it done before I even get to an oil change place
2. Good excuse to crawl under the truck and check out other things
3. I can do it for much cheaper than the dealership (buy filters from RockAuto and oil at Costco)
4. I worked at a dealer owned quick lube shop in high school. One day we were short staffed, so 3 of us teenagers were running the shop. 2 of us in the pit and the the receptionist gal up top filling the oil back up. We had a brand new '97 4Runner Limited come in for their first "free oil change" from when they purchased the vehicle. They got 5 min down the road and called us because their engine seized. Gal up top forgot to put oil back in. 2 weeks later she drove a car into the pit. Not sure where she was employed after that, but the level of training that most "lube techs" have is minimal, and I prefer they dont touch my vehicles.

An error as old as the ICE with a simple remedy of having another tech sign off on verified dipstick.

Another thing, how do we know the mechanic actually changed the oil? We weren’t there to watch.

Considering the source (REDDIT - - - alot of that **** is made up for click bait.)

Not saying that this doesn't happen though.

I do it because with the valve, it saves me time. Hose tip into pan, valve open, remove and replace filter, valve closed, fill with 6 qts, done. It's 20 minutes max with zero mess, Bezos Claus delivers my oil and filters to me and I can keep the used oil for my crazy metal melting furnace idea (which has yet to work but seems good in theory). Spending $100 for the dealership to take two hours to change my oil isn't a good deal.

I do it for all the reasons mentioned, but also because I don't want to admit that I'm too old to change my own oil.
Admittedly I make some strange noises getting up from off the ground.

Ouch. That's White lab coat Porsche oil change pricing.

Which, by the way, costs pretty much the same as the F150 when you do it yourself. :)
