Happy Sunday all, this is my first post here, but I've been a lurker since I bought the truck.

Truck is a 21 Lariat f150, vin 1FTEW1EP0MKD77549

When I bought it used about 4 mo. ago, I found that the radio version and build number were blank on sync 4, so I brought it to the dealer, it had a DTC u3000 (failed components) and they ordered a replacement and installed it in August. I brought the truck in for an unrelated issue around September 5th, and since the APIM replacement I had a bunch of weird issues on the screen (features I didn't have like multicolor interior lights, volume not showing the number, etc.) although it's now on version 21146, rev 145, had them look at the APIM again and try manually updating, and they were unable, so they ordered another APIM module. After they worked on it, radio is back to acting normal otherwise, all the incorrect features are gone and volume work properly.

Truck is almost out of factory warranty, and getting tired of the dealer, so I ordered a Mongoose cable and FDRS subscription. I can see that the error is:

Self Test Application
APIM - U2101 : 00 : 0B
U2101 = Control Module Configuration Incompatible
FT : 00 = No Sub Type Information
ST : 0B = Current DTC Fault is currently present

I've searched high and low, can't update APIM with a DTC present, and it won't clear. The only documentation I've found related to this is https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2021/MC-10189581-0001.pdf

Will another APIM replacement fix it? Did the dealer get it stuck by not following the module replacement procedure? I need help deciding the next steps, ideally there would be a procedure to get the module back to healthy without replacement.

You do NOT have a bad APIM
And it's unlikely you had a bad APIM originally.

You have an APIM that has bad software/firmware installed on it.
Which admittedly is just as big a problem, if not bigger, than having a bad APIM.

You're new here.
You are going to be amazed at the shear volume of information available regarding APIM and software updating.
Be patient. Take a breath. You WILL find the solution and it's well within your capability to fix your truck. :)

That doesn't guarantee that you will be happy about doing it yourself, of course, but you already have experienced the failure of the factory authorized service center industry not being willing/able to solve the issue.

THats a bad config code. EDIT

Means the config isnt compatible meaning something is one that shouldnt be on with something else. The two things do not match and shouldnt be on at the same time

Send me your VIn. I hope they didnt goof the software.

Deep breath taken, there’s definitely a lot of info spread throughout the forum, I did find a recommendation to write as-built (force with no changes) then reset the APIM, but no changes to the Dtc

Addendum to my earlier post.

Just-a-waffle, you probably wouldn't know it, but you just received an invitation for assistance from someone who KNOWS MORE about your dilemma than 99.9999% of all human beings on the planet.

Timing is everything, it appears. Lol
Posting on a Sunday morning is a brilliant advantage. A lot less competitive noise?

Do yourself a favor and help Jesse help you.

For slightly more context, truck was originally sold in Canada, and imported to the US just before I purchased it

so I do see CA country code in the APIM module, but other modules seem to have the same.

I would stop right where you are before you lock yourself out of the APIM (if you aren't already) and let Jesse take a look. PTS is showing your Sync version is still 20301 which is old software known to break the OTA process. You cannot update your APIM via traditional means.

Ok, I need you to go to your about sync screen and post a photo. It looks to me they did put a new apim in then took it out and left the original.

So I need to confirm what is in the truck as of now both serial and version.

After we will know what to do since you do have FDRS

Curious and following. Vehicle history shows dealer tried to PMI the APIM and also put no when asked if it was the original module several times on 9/5 and 9/6. It failed and they released the truck anyway as is.

But it has the correct Software version. He jsut needs to get it to sync on fords end so it releases the next update.

Youre in good shape then.

Run a PMI on the APIM.

When it asks if the original module is installed select No.
Ran the PMI with "no" to original module, failed because of the stored dtc
