So I wanted my own truck again but this time I wanted to change some things in what I wanted. I love the RCSB platform but I was really racking up the expense adding things to make it a higher trim and kinda missed some interior room plus I thought I would be satisfied with the work truck that I can’t mod.
So I started the hunt for the shortest truck I could get with the Lariat trim spec. In 23 that would be the crew cab which wasn’t going to work but 21-22 they offered the extended cab in a Lariat spec so that’s what I wanted.
I searched for 21-22 extended cab Lariat, 4x4 with the 5.0… which turned up 7 nationwide lol. 4 of these were long beds so it left me with 3 (obviously might be different now) to look through. There was one 22 which was like $55k which is ridiculous so it was out. The other 2 were very nearly the same spec 21s. The difference was 30k miles on one with the mid package and adaptive cruise for $46k and 48k miles on a mid package without ACC for $34k.
Knowing I could add ACC later if I want I pulled the trigger on the last one. Considering I traded my 22 XLT mid with 26k miles for $47k (granted I had $7500 in the whipple) I feel I didn’t get hurt too bad and I have everything already in my interior so I can focus on the engine mods :). I think selling all the interior stuff I have will be enough to get a large down payment on another whipple but this time I’m doing a stage 1R vs a stage 2 with the whistle mod.
If anyone knows an RCSB owner near Orlando that wants an interior makeover let me know, I’ve done the changes so many times I can replace the interior in a day lol.

I considered a Lariat when I ordered my 21.
Leather seats and many goodies that are of no interest to me shut that down.
I’m rural and do mostly hiway driving with very little city driving.
My 8ft SuperCab was ordered mostly for the ride and it excels in that category.
Not so much in downtown streets that were built for horse and buggy’s. Downright miserable in parking garages ( if I can even get in one).
In the 2-1/2 years I’ve had it, only seen maybe two or 3 of the 8 ft trucks and only one was a private vehicle
Virtually all of the 8 ft supers I’ve noticed going back to 17 or so we’re white commercial trucks

Surprisingly all the long bed supers were not white. Now I should preface with I searched for lariat 4x4 and 5.0 so possible there’s a ton of XL and XLTs that are probably commercial white with the V6s.

Congratulations on joining the Lariat SuperCab owner group!

I'm a long-time XLT SuperCab owner, the configuration works great for me, I was lucky to order a 2022 MY upgrade to Lariat having no idea it would be dropped (  ) the next model year.

I Love mine, hope you love yours, too! (y) :)

I think that's a better cab size for my use, but my primary complaint is ford keeping that door style vs 4 front hinged. Toyota's mid-sized cab is really what ford should consider doing for next gens - just not a fan the door style. Plus they don't offer the PB in that cab. Not sure why ford pushes the larger cab so much when the mids are plenty of room.

The whole push to the larger cabs reminds more of a SUV w/ a bed than a truck that seats 5. Truck design has really stagnated the last 20 years. Tie the cab and bed together and take utility up a notch. GM is the only one that's played with such concepts and they've been meh. Cybertruck was supposed to go down that route but they chose instead to compete on price vs features. They're really going to put a hurting on the current truck market. Their recent price drops on other models are crazy. They're taking no prisoners against the competition. I won't be buying a tesla anytime soon, but I sure as hell appreciate them mopping the floor with everyone else on pricing. Win win for customers :)

I'm a fan of the SCAB size had one for years but I hated the doors. I agree put the hinges on front so I can get in back without opening front doors. I use my rear space more now with a SCREW than I did with years of SCAB. My uncle has a GMC that is a few years old now not full crew cab but it has short rear regular doors. It's perfect design other brands have used too. I don't know why Ford is on the old school design still.

I have near a dozen adult children, including their spouses, and 8 grandchildren with more on the way.

I'm crew cab all the way. And I've kept my 2012 F150 mostly because it has the 40/20/40 front seat, so I can get 6 in it if necessary.

Of course I fetched a 2017 Transit 350 15 passenger van 6 years ago for obvious reasons. It has gathered more mileage than any vehicle I have ever owned. 190,000 miles and counting. Somebody uses it every single day.

My youngest son has a KingCab because he "didn't need" all that extra space in the back seat. He's only one kid in and his wife is already asking him "what were you thinking?" ?

There's a reason Ford offers so many cab options. I hope they never stop doing so.

My rear seat is tight with the center console option. Makes a middle rear seat all but worthless. It really seats 4, but I wanted the console more than the extra seat. Works for me, single guy I drive alone 99% of the time.

Obviously preferences and needs vary, no worries! Maybe I'm the odd-man-out but I happen to like the 'no "B" pillar / traditional Ford SCab' design, especially with the 180-opening door my '05 SCab lacks.

With the front passenger seat full-forward and/or laid back I can easily fit some large boxes / items that would be difficult if not impossible to load with a "B" pillar / two separate openings rather than the one large opening. Yeah, I've got the bed, but sometimes it's nice to have things secured in the cab / out of the weather.

But I certainly understand that frequently carrying a passenger(s) in the back might affect my attitude. I might have a passenger back there once-in-a-blue-moon (or less).

Pros / cons / pick your compromises, Eh? ;) :)

There's a reason Ford offers so many cab options. I hope they never stop doing so.
Amen! (y)

I prefer the no pillar, my buddies Ram extended cab looks silly next to my SuperCab with those tiny doors. The handles are half the door. Ford does it for seamless design they’ve stated that multiple times. Extended without suicide doors hurts aero and looks pretty dumb.

I considered doing the same thing for the same reasons but there are certain options I just can't give up. Like 360 cameras, rain sensing wipers, auto high beams, etc...

Plus, when I look at what fully loaded 2021 RCSBs are selling for... since I'd have to sell mine to buy an X-cab.

FIRST, I can't find one anywhere for sale (NOT "fully loaded" anyway)

Second... the ones I can find that are even close to mine are already asking more than what I paid for mine new.

This isn't my first rodeo buying a new truck and I knew (thought) going in that I'd be losing $10K driving it off the lot but I had a feeling that something this unique would gain in value eventually.

Of course I had no idea that a world-wide chip shortage would force Ford to stop offering this truck configured this way. Supply chain issues, inflation and the rising cost of steel, aluminum and labor would drive prices up this quickly.

And then there's that 0% loan!

I'm stuck with my little, tiny F150 monster and loving it!

Totally agree with this. I use my truck for work so the rear seats have been folded up the entire time I've had the truck. The wide door opening is great so I have easy access to all my tools which I prefer to keep in the cab, I feel the front opening "quad cab" doors would severely hinder the functionality for my use case. However I think increasing side impact safety testing will likely force Ford to adopt the forward hinged doors like everyone else.

Same when I had a super cab for 12 years. Seat always up in the back and throw stuff in there. I feel like I have much more room with crew though.

Ford has done a pretty good job of updating the SuperCab safety. The 2015 updated testing showed some glaring issues with the small overlap frontal and side pole test. They added the crash bars and seemed to have redesigned the rear door for 2016. If you look at the pole test that rear door is rock solid while the front door takes that impact on the 2016 models. The 2015 and older models folded up like tin cans though.
