Maybe someone can educate me on this one. People talk about E85, E30 tune but can we really use those higher ethanol contents? Aren't we limited to E15? Is there a tune that will makes it possible to use higher ethanol fuel?

Second question. I looked for pure gasoline option and most popular option is 90 octane. Should I ask for 90 octane tune (in leau of 91-93 tune)?

The limiting factor with regards to ethanol content is the flow rate of the fuel pump(s). Historically, ecoboost motors have had HPFP’s that don’t flow super high rates to the injectors so using a high ethanol content wasn’t possible because you couldn’t get enough fuel to the injectors to keep the AFR in range at high engine loads. The more ethanol you run, the more cooling you get during detonation and the more you can advance the timing to get more power out of the motor. It’s not really about how high the ethanol content is and more about can the fuel pump supply enough fuel because the engine requires more ethanol fuel than gasoline at high RPM without running the engine lean

Ethanol naturally has a higher octane, in-fact one of its uses is in place of other chemicals to bring octane levels up, but it's also got less energy per gallon. Keep in mind these are 'boxed' tunes and a dyno backed tune would allow for more power using your vehicle's actual performance (boxed tunes typically look at all vehicles tested and use the lowest values for 'safety').

The eXX options are sort of misunderstood a bit. Let's say you take a 90 octane straight gas and then you decide to blend in some E85. If the E85 is only 53% ethanol (values change w/ season and availability), its octane is 100. If you use 6g of 90 straight with 4g of e85 53% (you must test it), you've got a 94 octane 21% blend. With for-sure access to your 90 straight and e85, you could run up to an e30 tune. E85 octane level increases with the ethanol content. Unlike your pump 87 e10 which is GOING to have an 87 octane rating, but may not have any ethanol or up to 10% with all values in between.

The point is that depending on the the ethanol content, the energy in the fuel can be different, and if you're self blending even the octane rating can fluctuate. Even things like an e10 fuel not having any ethanol in it or having 10% changes potential power. The individual writing the tunes would have to know their fuel concentrations and related octane values for you to be able to calculate your own. They could be assuming worst possible conditions (the safe bet) and as such leaving performance on the table. If you know the values needed and had a little spreadsheet or an online calculator. Once you get past the initial learning of blending, it's much easier. The question is do you want to bother with it. Having a larger tank makes it easier unless you do a lot of miles. If you've got the room and means to handle 55g oil drums of fuel you can do your own blending in larger batches. Do keep in mind fuel tanks need to breathe, and with ethanol fuels you should incorporate a desiccant on its intake while keeping them out of the sun.

Is anybody who purchased this that happens to tow able to share real world results?

really interested in mileage gains and various weights behind the truck.

greatly appreciated!

Livernois doesn't think there's substantial difference in fuel economy. And I'd also think that most people tuning their trucks are doing it for acceleration and power, not efficiency, so they'd tend to be folks with heavy right feet.

That said, I tuned my sports car and it not only added 17% power it improved mileage about 4-5% from what I've seen over a few thousand miles. So it is possible.

Just loaded 91-93 performance tune with eboost. After a few miles of rough shifting, it became smooth. so far I have driven about 120 miles and it is using more gas (about 22 mpg compared to 25 mpg). It stays in electric mode less. I guess it takes time for adaptive learning to learn enough to make a difference. One thing different is that it now drives like my old 1970 firebird 6.6L I used to drive - whole drivetrain is always fully engaged and ready to respond to the pedal movement.

Is your pedal very very sensitive to input? So, little touch = big jump?

I am sort-of comparing to how it was before. it was a "take a breathe in and jump" kind of feeling before. now it is gradual like how EV pulls off.

I think it’ll settle more to where it’s in electric about the same amount

Mine definitely stays in electric longer and has better mileage. But I was getting 22-23 before, now 24-25.

Im seriously thinking about adding E-boost. Seems like a no brainer if you’ve already got a Livernois tune.
