Hey guys, been researching both and was going to go with the 3.5 when I order but not sure now as I can save a considerable amount if I go with 2.7. I will be doing light towing rarely and will mainly use my truck as a daily. I love the 5.0 but all the oil consumption issues have me worried.

any advice is appreciate, thanks!

Mine should be delivered this week, but I went with the 2.7 with the 2.7 payload package. I have a few friends with 2018 & 2020 2.7s who love them, and who also have considerable mileage on them so longevity seems to be a non issue. Im stepping up to a truck from purely car ownership so didn’t have a need for the 3.5 or 5.0. 2.7 was the perfect sweet spot for me and because of this engines reputation, actually swayed me from getting a Ram.

Coming from a 6.2 F250 and went with the 2.7.
If you are rarely towing...save the money and go with the 2.7.
Just my thoughts

Thank you, it’s really tempting and I can save $1400..

It sounds like your driving habits would be similar to mine. I have a 2.7 and I’m impressed by it. I think you’ll be more than happy with the 2.7 too

2.7 would have been my second choice after the 5.0, Though I wish you could still get the 6.2.

Ford F-150 Undecided - 2.7 or 3.5? D2CC5793-B8A4-41EE-96EA-F1F9506367F3
I went with the 2.7 and I am pleased. I was getting 27Mpg on the backroads of southern Michigan this summer. Granted I was keeping it around 62mph.

I could be wrong however, the last I heard is that the 3.5 liter’s water pump is internal and can be a costly repair.

that’s the only negative I could find on the 3.5 when I was looking.

I walked in thinking I was getting a 5.0 and I drove off with a 2.7 after talking with the salesman. He is a friend of the family and I trust his advice.
Maybe with the $1400 you are saving you can add on a max tow package or something

I've owned the 3.5 and the 5.0. I'm going back to the 5.0. The 2.7 is a good motor. Check out this video.
Which F150 engine would a Ford Technician pick?

I bought off the lot and it came with a 3.5. It’s great but I would say overkill I probably would have opted for 2.7 if building to save a few bucks and I’ve heard it’s easier to milk a few extra MPG out of.

If you don’t need the towing power, def go with the increased reliability and gas mileage of the 2.7l

I indirectly own a 3.5 via powerboost. I love it and the power is great. Love to have crazy power on tap and I will rarely tow.

That being said Id say 2.7l as I woulda got around fine without the lovely speed increase and mpg city.

So get a 2.7 save ur money unless the power just does it for you imo. You don't need a reason to drive what you want.

I wasn’t aware of that with the water pump! I have a 2016 Explorer and had to replace the water pump, it was over 2 grand, what a terrible design by Ford to place it inside the engine. That alone may sway me from the 3.5.

I appreciate your advice, thanks much!

Very welcome.

I could be wrong on the current run of 3.5liter engines so please look into that if it’s something you are considering.

it truly is an awful design. I am sure the engineers have a good reason for its placement if you were to ask them.

Here is the water pump for the Ecoboost/Powerboost up to 2021, it is NOT internal:

OP:

My 2.7L was rated to tow up to 13,100lbs and my camper and dirt bike just about max'd that out. It towed fine on everything except freeways where big trucks coming by would get the dog wagging the tail. Lighter loads will be fine, my boat only weighs 4500lbs and I could go anywhere with that.

The 2.7L is a pretty quick motor in sport mode with no shortage of giddy up and go. When coupled with an AWD equipped truck, it can go just about anywhere.
