I bought my 500A Lariat in March of this year right before all of the chip shortages drove truck prices up. I got a good deal on it (at least I think so) at getting it for 49k for a 56k MSRP. I loved everything about the truck and couldn't complain about a single thing. However, I had to take advantage of an insanely good deal by selling it to Vroom for 61k. Probably not the best business to sell used cars over MSRP... but I am happy!

p.s. NEVER do business with Vroom if you are not getting an insane deal. Terrible customer service and experience.

Not a bad idea if you've got a solid plan for another vehicle. I'm awaiting delivery and hoping to sell my lease on a sedan that runs out in November to a company like vroom. Currently set to profit at least 4K on the lease, which is just insane to think about.

Have you searched them to see what price they have on it now? I stumbled across a Ram TRX recently with under 5000 miles for $20K over original sticker. It was at a Mercedes dealer.

They sold it for 58k. Still crazy to buy a used truck over msrp, but not a great business model to lose 4k on a vehicle.

Just did this myself with my Chevy SS. Same experience as you with their customer service. I actually bought it from them originally and it was the worst car buying experience I've ever had and said I would never work with them again, until they offered a deal I couldn't refuse to sell to them :D.

Not bad! Depending on your tax bracket, you made a decent chunk of change.

Wait, they sold the truck they bought from you at $61,000 for $58,000? There must be some screwy business going on with them.

These new e-commerce used car dealers are driving up already inflated prices by doing nothing other than controlling supply. They must be using investor money to drive out competitors because there's no other good reason for such practices.

The car dealership cartel must have been blindsided by this, otherwise they might have at least lobbied against such practices being legal, even though they've been doing it for decades. Though it's hard to feel bad for the dealerships that used to have a monopoly on new trade-ins; companies like Vroom and Carvanna are only adding additional avarice to the mix without any additional support or benefits. At least with dealerships, there's a chance that their service department and sales staff might be useful :p

Flyover states will be hurt the most as these nationwide organizations raise all prices to those seen in big cities.

I’m guessing the deal that I got is because of less than stellar machine learning algorithms pricing trade ins. They probably price all lariats the same. At least that’s what it seems like when looking at vehicles they have for sale.

Vroom has taken the Carmax model one step further. It sure is nice not to have to negotiate. I have my doubts that the vast majority of Americans will want to order a car completely online though. It’s one thing to order a phone case on Amazon that you can return very easily. I have my doubts for various reasons that the Vroom/Carvana model is the future.

Us blue collar fly over folks just have to play the system. Trade cars in through things like Vroom and buy local. I’m all for getting a good deal, supporting local businesses (not mega dealer channels with no face), and minimizing the profits of the large terribly ran businesses like Vroom. I for one, even as a data scientist professionally, think running a good business is far more than having a slick iPhone app and a few Carnegie Melon grads churning out ML models. Anyway, rant over.

Oh, I ended up buying a 2017 Limited F-150 from Granger Ford in IA. Couldn’t be happier.

They probably sold it to a lower-tier borrower and made the difference back in interest payments. Probably got some dealer fees and warranty add-ons etc.

Yep! The local shady "Buy Here, Pay Here" lot has had a few used 21 F150's parked out front now and again over the past year. It's sold almost immediately, and I am sure it's probably some insane interest rate if the same buyer isn't able to buy from a Ford dealer.

This got me excited about selling my car through vroom when I buy my truck, but I guess they aren’t interested in all cars… ?

I sold my '20 XLT with 26K miles on it to Vroom for $1400 more than I paid for it new. They had it for several weeks. They first priced it at $9K more than I paid for it new...but ended up dropping the price to $1400 under what they paid me for it (my original new price). They must make a lot on financing to stay afloat.

I ordered my Platinum EB in March and got it in August. After waiting 5 months for my truck, I wouldn’t sell it. Btw I was offered 80k for a 72k MSRP truck. The insane prices will probably continue into early 2022 from what been hearing. As soon as the new chip plant is built and operational in Arizona, the car prices should start to go lower.

It is crazy. I am thankful to get an opportunity with Granger to get 3% below invoice. An absolute steal right now in this market.
