Anyone know what this could be? I thought rust spots, but the cab corners seem to be plastic caps.

I noticed it last night on the passenger side as I was cleaning off tire shine sling. Then this morning I looked and it was on the other side as well. Is it the tire shine ruining the plastic pieces? I used a product for the first time on Friday. I had black dots all over the truck from tire sling but these didn’t come off. I’ve tried clay bar, compound, and an iron remover. No dice.

Any thoughts??

That's a specific fungus. Comes from mulch. Artillery fungus maybe?
This stuff is nuts, did you pass through any new landscaping or drive over a mulch pile? I had to use a mild cutting compound to remove it. Strange it’s on only vertical surfaces though, anything like this on the roof or hood at all?

Don't remind me. That mess infested mulch in front of house and put dots all over the front of house and my last truck...

This doesn't look like that. The fungus is round pellets that will break and smear if you wipe it with anything and they already tried that. It does take a lot of forceful rubbing to get it off though if this is the remains left behind.

not that I am aware of?? But obviously possible. Yes only on the flush pieces as you can see, and only on those cab corners, no other sign of it anywhere on the vehicle. I forgot to mention I also tried WD40 and it did not work either. My ocd is going to be driven nuts by this if I cannot get it removed ha!

Out of all the things I’ve tried, it hasn’t removed any of it. The picture is a little deceiving as they look black, but they’re brown/orange, which is why I initially thought rust. But again, it seems to be plastic. Also smooth to the touch, so it’s like it’s degrading the material, not something stuck on it.

It looks like this is the only place on the truck that is affected? You can feel the spots, it's not like they are under the clear coat and something is pushing out thru the paint from underneath? Try a little acetone or lacquer thinner on a rag, not too much, let it soak for a minute and then try to wipe it off. Good luck.

No, you cannot feel them, and yes only place on the vehicle. Maybe they are under a layer of clear coat. If it was the fungus, wouldn’t it be elsewhere also?? Just seems odd they have just appeared in the last 36 hours.

Try some white vinegar. I’ve removed stuff with it from my vehicles that even acetone wouldn’t take off.

Try nail polish remover, my poor old F350 plow truck sits out under hardwoods all year and this stuff removes anything the trees throw at it.

Your favorite body shop may look at it and tell you what it is. Ours did so for spots on the hood of a brand new car we bought in 2023. Determined mfg defect. Replaced hood under warranty.

The more I have messed with it the more it seems to be under the surface. Even picking at it with my nail has no affect. ??‍♂

very frustrating
