CarFax is often touted as the be all, tell all regarding a vehicles history. Unfortunately it doesnt always tell the truth….
I traded in a truck 8 months after taking out a deer while doing 70 at 3am. Police report was filed, insurance paid for $15k worth of truck repair and when I went to dealer, CarFax showed it as accident and airbag deployed free. Another truck I had was involved in an accident and CarFax listed it as being run off road and from damage description it was a rollover. Couple dealers wouldn’t touch it on a trade based on that despite showing pictures of accident and no roof/door damage. One even put it on a lift to show me the “bent frame which should have been replaced” which was just the bumper mount edge tweaked back and pulled straight. I disputed Carfax’s description of the damage and accident with pictures and they agreed it was in error and changed the damage description and modified the severity. Also their description for service doesn’t always match what was performed.
Moral of the story. Run a CarFax check on your own vehicle before you trade it in to make sure there are no hidden problems your not aware of. And if you do find something, dispute it, they modified mine within a couple days.
