I've been researching power adders like tunes, superchargers, turbos, and the like. I also watched a number of videos that show dyno runs and most will post a graph to show how the add-on performs.

Below is an example dyno run graph for a tuned 5.0L. The tune is says it increases HP and Tq. The bluish colors I guess is stock and the greenish colors are tuned.

Am I reading this right, from 2K to ~5.5K RPM, the stock and tune performance are about equal. After ~5.5K RPM we see the additional HP and Tq improvement. I see the blue and green are different ~2K RPM, perhaps this shows the tune smoothing out the acceleration.

In other words, there really isn't any improvement unless you hit 5.5K+ RPM.

You're reading that plot correctly, "about equal" is in the eye of the beholder, and that particular 'tune' may well not be for you.

Personally, I pay close attention to the differences, however subtle, at the low RPM range.

you are correct, not much change, and the majority of the change is from running to a higher RPM .

throughout the power band, you are seeing maybe 5-10hp increases, which isnt really enough to notice a difference. And if you are noticing a difference, it could be due to transmission tuning more than an increase in engine performance.

Thanks. I guess in the 5.0 setup, you might only be interested in the other features a tune provides (disable CD, auto start-stop, shift strategy, etc), other wise why spend the money.....

I don't believe the 5.0 leaves much on the table from the factory compared to the turbo motors, hence the smaller gains. The real benefit to the tune will be the things you listed along with better overall drivability.

Looking at this tune tells me that I would avoid it because all it does is increase power in the rev range that I spend the least amount of time in. Like you said, It's all above 5.5k.

There is a turbo upgrade for the Ranger's 2.3T that actually LOSES low end torque only to gain it above SIX thousand. Useless...

One thing you will almost certainly notice, however, is better feeling throttle response. Which is why pedal commanders are becoming more popular.
