I kept the filter from the recent oil & filter change. Opened it up today: inspected it with a handheld magnifier. Nothing apparent (ie no "chunks"). The magnet in it had perhaps 6 or so silvery shards maybe 1/16" or so along with exected metal dust. The issue of the transmission being low by 1 1/2 quarts after a routine filter & oil changeout remains too large to be "just topping up." There is a large bubble in there somewhere (as in ~87 cubic inch bubble). The fact that this sets up with oil level in the normal band on completion of the changeout, then the next morning it is low by a quart & a half, without evidence of leakage anywhere, is a big deal. I sent off an oil sample for analysis. Will let you know results if anything significant is found.

How routine is changing transmission fluid? (which you can call oil, I guess)

How often does Ford recommend it?

Transmission fluid, per Ford, inspect FLUID LEVEL every 10,000-20,000 Maintenance Interval ...period. (I change at 50,000):

Well, that's nice... but also only relevant to those that trade their truck before 100,000 miles or so... If you're going to keep it longer, well... good lubrication along with cleaning out manufacturing dust & debris is important... (I acknowedge that Ford does a good job of this). So be your own judge. The issue of this thread is that when you finally do change it watch out for this magic quart & a half... not when you decide to change the transmission oil... or fluid, if you will.

I don't think there's transmission dip stick to check fluid level. Truck needs to be on the lift and remove splash panel.

It's not a typical dipstick like we expect to see extended up and easy to access, but instead is on the side of the 10r80

...and to measure the fluid level the transmission has to be at operating temperature and the truck has to be sitting level. The dip stick location is right by the exhaust so you also risk burns while trying to get the stick out. I'd say it's not intended for the average Joe to check it in his garage.

The average Joe would definitely find it uncomfortable in the driveway or garage.

A little easier if

That’s quite a set up. What’s that in the foreground? Mazda? If so, does your Mongoose work with it?

I actually don't know, but possibly. I have a different ODB dongle for it though and have only used it for a 93 octane versatune. Not much impact, but crisper throttle response.

It was the previous generation Miata (NC) that was basically a 2.0 liter version of Ford's 2.5 liter.

But yea, the little Mazdarati is a blast.

I would be interesting to check. I have seen some J2534 devices made for Fords that also work on Mazdas. The Mongoose for Ford does not expressly say it works on Mazdas, but Opus does not sell a separate programmer for Mazda. So, I was curious.

If I were to get that sports car, there is no way I could get out again. I'd have to sleep and take my meals sitting in it.

Believe me, it takes a technique for this old geezer. And I'm a glutton for punishment because I have 2 2-seaters that require the entry/exit routine. :)

By the way, it involves removing my shoes, so there's that too.
