Howdy all
I guess my truck didn’t come with any kind of transmission cooler or heat exchanger.
Off-Road at lower speeds it gets pretty toasty.
Last night it got up to 235°. Probably doesn’t help I had it in 4L for a decent bit before climbing a long steep switchback mountain in 4H.
Has anyone gone about installing a trans cooler on their truck? Any recommendations?

235 is fine with Dex/Merc ULV. All F150s have a heat exchanger and some have an additional air to fluid cooler. The thermal bypass doesn't even open until it gets over ~205.

As far as I can tell, my truck didn’t come with any kind of cooler. It’s a 25 XL 5.0 RCSB 4x4 and no trailer package. There might be coolant lines ran to it that can help, but that would need more RPM to do anything and going up hill slowly off road, you aren’t very high in the revs.

All F150s have a fluid to fluid heat exchanger and some (3.5s with max tow, possibly others I'm forgetting) have a separate air to fluid cooler. The fluid to fluid heat exchanger is more efficient and does the job just fine. It's not 1995 where transmissions will die if they get over 180F. Your temperature is in line with the kind of driving you said you were doing. I've seen them that high as well crawling around in beach sand for example.

i’m telling you, your truck has a transmission cooler. All transmissions have a cooler or heat exchanger.

Some are internal to the radiator, some are external in front of the radiator. Some of these new trucks have a heat exchanger in front of the transmission pan some have them along side of the transmission case above the pan.

Only Raptors and Police models have an air to oil cooler system. All P702 (2021+) models have a transmission mounted heat exchanger plate that uses engine coolant.

Your temps are typical and not concerning

I have added the Raptor cooler to my truck. It is a little involved but it has noticeably improved operating temps in heavy use, including sand dune testing I just did on my recent trip. My peak temperature was 220° in 4Hi and heavy abuse and it almost instantly dropped down to 192° (operating temp for the air to oil thermostat) once I parked and idled to relax for a few minutes.

Mine must be inside the radiator then because I’m not seeing one anywhere else.

Interesting, might be a good thing for me to look into. Especially since I’m going to be hitting a lot of sand in the future with this truck.
Do you remember how much the parts cost?
Would it be best if a shop did the install?

I broke it down in a different post linked below. For peace of mind I’d recommend a shop but it depends how handy you are. Costs would be approaching $1,000 I believe.

Your cooler looks like the pic below and is mounted on the transmission, driver side about half way up. Thru me for a loop too…but we have one.
