Performed a fluid swap at 34K. Transmission was fine - preventative. Vehicle came out the other side with smoother shifts.

ok that makes sense. Is the torque converter itself different? if so, then i am assuming the following tq's would be incompatible:

yes, a transmission guy that I highly respect says service the transmission at 50k. Even sooner, if you to regularly

I think I’ll be servicing the transmission like I have my Toyotas for the last 20 years. Drain and fill every 30k
Since about 25% of my miles seem to be towing my wheeling truck, I'm heading for a 40k fluid exchange later this month. Thinking doing the filter change at 80k.

I had my transmission “rebuilt” with new drum under warranty last summer due to being supper clunky and really hard downshift into 3rd. They did a bunch of tests and reprograming before approving the rebuild. It came back and drove super smooth again but all the issues have slowly come back. It slammed gears downshifting so hard the other day I thought it was toast but drove fine after. Scheduling a trip back to the dealership. I haven’t even hit 30k miles yet. Still love the truck beside the transmission.

Ford's rebuilds recently started to include a different colored drum, suggesting a new part. So hopefully the upgrade is naturally part of the rebuild kit.

Ford has a 150k fluid change interval. Won't wait that long for mine.
The revised CDF drum is anodized and includes a machined lip to stop the bushing from slipping. So it is a different/revised part that solves one of the issues. The secondary issue with the CDF drum being the clutches eating into the drum over time. This is likely where the anodize was added. We'll have to wait and see if it solves the ladder. I have also heard something being done with the valve body to prevent the valves from Canting and wearing unevenly (I don't know much past that cause I'm not a transmission guy but that's what I have researched and been told

Another factor are the valve spools binding up in the valve body due to sloppy retention clips. When they bind and then free you end up with the 'bang' shifts.

Thank you, that's what I heard but didn't know how to articulate it. I haven't done any research on that issue yet but since it's lower end I figure I'd be able to remedy that if it's still an issue after the rebuild mines getting. Do we know if there is a solution to that yet?

If the valve body gets damaged and you're under warranty, ford will replace the valve body but the clips are still the same.

Well darn, I was hoping that they could just throw in a new Improved valve body but no luck there. I’m dropping my truck off today and should have it diagnosed by the end of the week. If they decide on a complete replacement is there any hope I’ll be better off than before?

There seems to be a solution and looks to be THE solution leading to prevent burnt clutches. I learned about it yesterday and shared it on this post.
