Has anyone brought their truck into Ford to address the issue of clunking when down shifting? If so what did they do to fix the problem or were you told that 'that's normal'. My 2021 3.5 sometimes clunks when down shifting from 4th to 3rd badly enough to leave marks on a gravel road. I don't think this is normal.

Hi there! If you send over a DM with your VIN and Ford dealer info, I can look into your concerns on my end.

I have a 2022 3.5L Ecoboost (18k miles) and have experienced the same although not as hard to leave marks on a gravel road. Curious if you have also noticed whether or not your trans skips/passes 2nd gear on up and down shifting?

Yes the trans skips from 1 to 3 upshifting but I'm not sure about 3 to 1 down shifting. 1 to 3 has been like that since new. The marks on the gravel road was the last time it did it and that's what prompted me to post on this site.

Along with the clunking, mine is consistently skipping over 2nd gear up/down shifting. Will be very interested in hearing any updates you may have regarding the clunking issue. Thanks!

I'm thinking the 2nd gear skip is there for normal driving but towing a light load or heavy acceleration might use 2nd. Like I said, my truck has skipped 2nd since new so I think this is normal. What isn't normal is the clunk.

Yeah mine shifts very roughly. Its usually downshifts from 4-3 and 3-1, but can be downshifts from 6 to 5 and 5 to 4 a little less commonly. Upshifts can be rough too, but usually arent as bad. All this is GREATLY exacerbated when cold.

Let us know how this turns out?
Thanks
I brought my truck in to the dealer, the tech drove it with a 2000 pound trailer attached and without the trailer attached and could not make it clunk. That's always the way it goes for me. We discussed the possibility of a bad valve body but without something showing up on the tech's computer that was hard to prove. They said there is a TSB on the trans and did a reset on it. It's still too early to see if that reset had any effect. With only 19000 miles on a 2021, I don't drive it much, so only time will tell if it's fixed or not. I'll try to post again when I can put some more miles on it.

Strap a go pro to the bottom of the truck and point it in the direction where you think the clunk is coming from

There is a procedure to break-in the valve bodies that supposedly fixes many of the harsh shifting concerns that people have, but good luck with getting a dealer to acknowledge the issue and apply the fix. I've been to two different dealers so far and received the same treatment as you. So far there's been zero improvement because all they do is reset the adaptive shift tables (which is easily done with Forscan).

And did you get a tech to go on a test drive with you to confirm that there's no clunk? I haven't done that yet, but plan to whenever I schedule another dealer service visit. I'm convinced that most Ford dealers train their techs to claim "cannot replicate" by default for this kind of non-catastrophic (but annoying) transmission issue, unless you are physically present to essentially force them to acknowledge the issue. I think that's because it's a very widespread problem and they'd lose tons of money if they took the time to fix every truck that comes in.

The Skip from 1-3 is normal when the truck is under light load. It wont skip 2nd if you have weight on the truck or are towing.

I dont think Tow / Haul Mode automatically removes the skip, however I have never seen it shift 1-3 when in tow haul. That said not a great data point - the only time I am in tow haul is when I have 7,000lb of boat behind me and its going to always want 2nd when towing that much weight.

The clunk happens to me also, doesn't matter if the trans is warm or cold. Its most noticeable on downshifts. I have never had it bad enough to leave marks on pavement, but for sure not the smoothest shifting transmission I have ever experienced.

I love the 10 speed, it really does help with towing, but for the record my 2015 with the six speed did not have any of these issues.
