Trade '18 HDPP for '23 HDPP?

Hello all,

Thank you for the add to this site. I was referred here from F150Forum as we are thinking of upgrading into a 2023 from a 2018.

Currently our 2018 F150 XLT Crew 6.5' 3.5l Eco 4x4 HDPP is at 125,000. Our 3rd party warranty is up at 150,000, less than a year away. We pull a 3 horse gooseneck, loaded max to about 9,000 lbs on weekends, otherwise it is a daily driver. The truck handles the trailer great and is a very drama free towing experience.

The warranty has been a life saver as we have had the phasers replaced twice, and just had a Ford Reman transmission installed, all with just the $100 deductible each time. The new transmission does shutter some when decelerating. After looking over the maintenance history, it seems it was at the dealer quite a bit, but overall have been extremely happy with the truck.

Locally, we found a 2023 F150 HDPP, XL Crew 6.5' bed for sale. Sticker $57,1XX and can get it for $49,000. They are offering us $15,500 for the used truck, which isn't much, but more than both Carvana and Carmax would offer. The only downsides to the XL are lack of power seats, no tow mirrors, no fog lamps. The build date is September 2023 so (looks like) we may be safe from the axle shaft issue I have been reading about.

We contemplated holding onto our current truck, continuing to drive as it is debt free, but face possibilities of unexpected repairs down the road with long wait times at the dealership - Or, trading in for the last year of the HDPP.

Immediate change we would add in OEM tow mirrors. The truck has Ford Co-Pilot 360 2.0, but I do not see any cameras on the now mirrors.

Anyone come from the previous generation?

I see you made your way here at my suggestion. I hope you find it a valuable suggestion in due time. Swapping on a set of tow mirrors is easy. I have regular mirrors on my XL 90% of the time, small garage problems. But when I tow bigger trailers, I can swap in set of tow mirrors I have in less than 10 minutes. Also, lots of members here have upgraded XL and XLT trucks to have things like 360 cameras, adaptive cruise control, etc. Long threads with lots of info on how to do it. Welcome to the Forum.

It’s unfortunate that the HDPP is unavailable for 2024 but I think a combination of CAFE numbers and total sales have made Ford drop it for some reason; which is too bad. It’s an excellent alternative to the Superduty trucks and better suited for some customers.

So either you’re stuck with what’s available, modifying that to your needs. Or getting a truck that is either too much, or not enough payload wise.

It seems also, that you use your truck enough to justify getting a newer one and since they’re not making any new HDPP trucks. Now is the second best time to replace yours for the time being. The best time would have been last year

The axle issue isn't fixed yet on max tow axles I don't think. I would do the trade or sell the other truck privately. 16k is a little low, but 49k seems good depending on options

Of all the obstacles you face finding an apples/apples replacement for your Gen13 HDPP workhorse, don't let the axle issue bother you much.

It's an inconvenience, of course, if you do shear a bolt. But it's a quick swap and hardly an invasive procedure. Or put another way, I'd take the axle swap over a phaser swap 100 times!

My brother from another mother is facing a similar situation to yours. I ordered a 2018 HDPP in his favorite color just to tempt him out of his 2001 7.3 SuperDuty. When the truck arrived at the dealership, it was his wife that ended up loving the QUIET and luxury ride, relatively speaking. ?

It's been a great truck for him, but he too needed phasers at 90,000 miles. At 125,000 now, he's looking for what he might find comparable.

It's a dilemma replacing such a unicorn.

I appreciate the input from folks. She decided she really liked the truck so we ended up going through with the trade. Apparently we have a ton of Ford Points from all the services from our 2018, and now from the new purchase, so that should cover the cost of OEM Tow Mirrors. Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this one does not have a plastic oil pan.

Our 2018 ran 275/65/R18 and we ran load range E Michelin Defender LTX. This truck is slightly different and has on General Grabber APT 265/70/R18 load range C. Unfortunately, we only had 25,000 miles on our Michelin. They are allowing us to swap tires if we wanted them in place of the Generals, but the new ones are about .5" taller and .4" narrower.

I'll post a picture in the coming days.

I'd swap those Michelins over in a heartbeat. The riiiiiiide is so much better.
