Hey y'all, I'm trying to decide between Johnson InsulatIR and xpel xr. The Johnson is significantly cheaper, but they're both supposed to be ceramic. Anyone have any experience with these?

I’ll be honest, I’m not sure I’ve ever bought the same type of tint twice. I’ve never been able to tell a difference in the products, but I can tell a difference in the workmanship.

Much like paint, it seems quality is a lot more dependent on prep/install than product.

What’s your understanding of the difference between the two brands? I know nothing about tint or brands other than percentage or light passing through

I currently have the xpel on two vehicles at this time. Including two previous vehicles I have had Xpel on four vehicles for the last five years. I haven’t had a problem yet and have been super happy with the heat reduction and clarity. I don’t have experience with any other ceramic tints so I really only have this testimony and not a comparison to offer. I have used the same quality shop, the only problem I had was a blemish in one windshield that the shop changed out with no questions asked. I have registered them all for xpel’s warranty.

I know nothing. I used 3m 10years ago on another vehicle. I'm pretty sure that wasn't ceramic cause it interfered with cell and radio reception. I have heard lots of good about xpel(the one that's about $250 more. I was hoping someone used the Johnson InsulatIR so I knew their opinion.

I’m not sure that paying xpel prices is worth it for tint. As long as it is ceramic and installed by someone who knows what there doing I wouldn’t worry about it. I would say look up the specs for both films. My guess is that the xpel is marginally “better” and your paying for the name not the product. Just my .02s!

XPEL is one of the industry leaders and they have massive amounts of youtube videos and people using them all over the country. Many people on this forum have XPEL and I've yet to hear a complaint. Never heard of Johnson InsulatIR and not much google results except maybe a few on tintdude.

Yeah, I'm sure it's good, nothing but good reviews for the shop, but I'm gonna stick with the name brand with a million good reviews. Also, Go Dawgs!

I have Xpel on the Raptor and another vehicle. I've really liked it and have zero complaints. I'll likely continue to use it on future vehicles.

That said, Llumar, 3M, etc all make really quality ceramic tint products.
