Have a 21 5.0 FX4 with about 20K on it. Here in the last few weeks I've noticed what I can only describe as a low frequency rumbling sound when I drive, but not mechanical. It reminds me of what happens if your tailgate doesn't latch 100%, or the spare tire not being 100% snug. like something loose vibrating/resonating at a very low frequency based on bumps/road smoothness etc. Happens at any speed, but just sounds like amplified road/truck vibration. Most people would probably tell me I'm crazy and just chalk it up to normal road/truck sounds, since it's not very loud, and I would probably agree with them if it weren't something that I know the truck hasn't done prior to recently.

It's hard to pin down where it's coming from exactly. seems like the front end. I mostly just don't know what to even check. I haven't taken it to the dealer yet, but they're just gonna tell me they couldn't find anything wrong and/or can't hear what I'm talking about. Has this happened to anyone else or anyone have any thoughts on what could cause it if it's not the tailgate or spare? (checked those already)

You could try banging on various metal parts with a rubber mallet trying to home in on it.

Hi there! Will you send us a message with your VIN and your local Ford dealer? I can look into things on my end.

Is this it

Nah, it's like super low frequency, and it's not intermittent or anything, it literally just sounds like amplified road noise. It's not something I'd be able to get audio of.

Do you have the infamous IWE disengagement issue?

Happens in under 32F weather.

Easiest way to tell is when you hear the noise, hit the 4WD button. If it immediately stops then you’ve got the issue.

there is a TSB for it.

Definitely the IWE. Drivers side? Parts are ordered and on back order for mine. There is a service bulletin available. Also another thread on this.

I guess it was just my tires. I got new ones today and everything seems normal now. They were getting kinda close, but i feel like they noise came on kinda fast.
