Ford F-150 String hanging in rear wheel well? 20220416_131748

Found this string with rubber end cap hanging down from the front of the driver's side rear wheel well. It's just under the fuel door.

Any idea what it might be? Trunk details in signature.

Thanks for any assistance!

I believe it is the backup method to open the fuel door.

Ahh, that make sense - lazy me for not reading the manual! I guess it's not a secure as the inside door release would seem to imply.

Wonder why it's not just a push to open type door, that would seem a lot less complicated for the effect.

Thanks!

I think this is something left over from the manufacturing process. My 21 platinum has a gas cap that you simply lift to open, no locking mechanism at all. I just looked on my truck, but because of the wheel liners, you can't see much of anything.

Mine has a button to the left of the steering wheel - perhaps it's a PowerBoost specific setup.

Hybrids have sealed/pressurized tanks to help prevent fuel vapors from overcoming the evap system when the engine is off. The powerboost has an electronic open (and a backup release) to allow the system pressure to normalize before you open the door to keep fuel from rushing out.

It is a backup fuel door release on the Powerboost. Not gonna lie, my buddies already call my truck a "Pruis". Don't need what looks like a tampon string hanging out if the wheel well.
Yeah, I had that exact same thought, but didn't want to go there. Grabel (my truck's name) might be a bit embarrassed. I just hope she doesn't have a coolant leak... (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Actually, if you pull it, the Blue Oval falls off the grill and is replaced with a Bow Tie. Then the nightmare begins.

I just bought a F150 and it has the same string hanging down. Did you figure out the fix for that??

My attempts to tuck it away didn't pan out - after a drive or two it'd pop back down.

But after I installed some rear wheel well liners, I was able to tuck it away securely. And I think I can still pull it down should the need arise. I installed "Rugged" brand liners, but I'm sure any brand would do just as well - just need something to hold it up and out of the way.

Take care,
OTM

I believe the powerboost is the only F-150 with the locking gas door. Quite frankly I was glad to hear this as a locking gas door is one of the things I missed on my 2009 Tacoma. When gas was $2 it was not as big a deal as it is now. I probably am going to cut that string off mine.

I had this oddity on day one on my PB. It kept hitting the tire and we'd hear this "tic....tic....tic" sound from outside. Now it's gone, no idea where. We hardly knew ye....
