DISCLAIMER: This is a question for a hypothetical function. ;)

Is there a way to stream video on the display while driving? Maybe using a creative method through car play? Is there a mod that does this? Has anyone figured this out?

Getting ready to go on a long road trip and was just curious... not for the driver to watch, but for the passenger..you know.

CarLinkit
Thanks. Have you used a Carlink in your truck? If so, any issues when you disconnect it? I’m not all that smart with IT stuff and I don’t want to screw up my stuff or void a warranty or anything.

not too sure about carlinkit. had one in my non wireless Ranger and it was only a wireless way to get apple carplay to the screen without a USB. mine did not have a capability for anything beyond apple carplay and the apps on that.

maybe there are other versions of carlinkit than I had, but I would research before buying

there was a thread on here about another expensive box like Carlinkit that did stream video.
but as I recall it connected behind the dash or something like that.

I use the Carlinkit AI box in my truck for reasons other than watching video so I can’t speak to how well it does Netflix, YouTube, etc. It is plugged in to the USB port and mimics Apple CarPlay but runs stock android like a tablet. You can download almost any app from the google play store to run on it. They just updated the firmware so that it does full screen as well. I am still playing around with it, but it is working good for me. I purchased on Amazon for around $200. They have several versions, I got the highest spec that is running android 12. It should do exactly what you are wanting.

Edit to add: I am using a hotspot from my iphone for internet access, but it has a slot for a SIM card so you can put a tablet sim card in and have 4g connectivity.

Yes. You just plug it in to your USB port when you want to use and disconnect when done. You go to the Google Play store and download the apps you want (Netflix, Max, Prime, etc). Rather than use data and stream, I download shows prior on my home wifi, then turn off CarPlay and bluetooth on my phone, and the kids watch the downloaded shows. Netflix can be glitchy this way as you only get a few days before you have to reauthorize your downloads. Max and Prime work great. I do the same in my wife's Kia.

If you search these devices you will find them anywhere from $100-500. I have one from Amazon that was $100. Has plenty of memory for my needs and isnt laggy, but that could also be because I dont stream over cell data.

Went through the site, talk about no info!?
They are NOT setup to sell to public. So yea, the consumer experience is obviously NOT what is expected. They have been direct selling to dealerships and so this is all new to them.

If you really want to know what their product(s) is and how it is designed, you gotta do the old fashioned thing and call them. They DO have knowledgeable people who know the product inside-out.

I'm not in a rush, but I do think I am going to give it a try just to see if it's as no-fuss as they say it is. Supposedly plays nice with Sync4 just connected to the USB media hub.

It's all about the software!
So if it's well done, it'll be obvious.

Dashlynx seems interesting. What I like is plugging in a Fire TV stick. I think I'd prefer this. I would just want a device that basically turns my screen into a TV just like at home.

I'll paraphrase my understanding of their approach, after a lengthy discussion with someone who came across as very knowledgeable of the product.

You plug it into the Sync4 USB media hub.
Sync4 sees the device as an IPhone. Or put another way, the device presents itself AS an IPhone to Sync4.

At that point the "magic" is provided by their software leveraging that relationship with Sync4, but with features that IOS doesn't have. Like pass-through HDMI. Or pass-through USB (camera)
And yes, their claim is that you could use devices like a Firestick or Roku.
Note that although we Sync4 folks don't need the device to provide Wireless Carplay/Android Auto, since Sync4 has it natively, this device offers that as well for a vehicle that didn't already have wireless.

I am not vouching yet for how well this device performs. But I did want to mention it and I do have intentions of checking it first hand, unless someone beats me to it.

I don't use wireless AA for two reasons; 1) I access other things on my phone such as Torque, and 2) since I want to access other things I don't need nor can I use wireless charging so I have to plug in.

I just want a device that facilitates using a streaming stick. For my needs it does not need to facilitate AA (nor Carplay) at all.
