On my 22 STX with old school shifter on steering column has no lock when going from forward to reverse
In the old days to go from forward or neutral to reverse it would hit a step-up meaning you had to pull back on level to go into reverse
I know if you were driving 30 mph and it went into reverse it has a safety switch to save the transmission but trying to get boat in driveway it feels weird as compared to my muscle memory of vehicles from the past
Last vehicle I had with the column shift was probably a new 79 Dodge Powerwagon
Anyone else notice this?

Just thinking these trucks automatically go from drive to park as a safety feature if you cut the key off in drive when parking
You hear the electric motor and watch it move the lever into park and that step might have been eliminated to allow this?

No need for the detent or step or notch as the ‘puter does the shifting. Won’t let you select any direction with out your foot on the brake either.

The Expedition police package with the column shifter still has the detent and no automatic park mechanism.
